USA’s batsman Jaskaran Malhotra hit himself into record books when he hit six sixes in an over in a one-day international against Papua New Guinea, on Thursday, September 9, 2021. The incident happened when the two sides met in the second ODI of the series and the USA posted 271/9 in their 50 overs.
Jaskaran Malhotra, who hails from Chandigarh, Punjab, and has played FC cricket for Himachal Pradesh, moved to the United States of America for greener pastures and a chance to play international cricket. He is a wicketkeeper-batsman and made history in the above-mentioned ODI match.
Papua New Guinea had won the toss and chose field first. The USA found themselves struggling for 29/3 but then Jaskaran Malhotra took center-stage with Aaron Jones (22) and Nisarg Patel (20) giving him much-needed support. He went after the PNG bowlers with gay abandon and stroked 16 sixes and 4 fours in his 124-ball 173* innings.
Jaskaran Malhotra Becomes The First USA Batsman To Score An ODI Hundred
During his innings, he singled out Gaudi Toka, who unfortunately went wicketless in the match. Jaskaran Malhotra took over the bowler to hit six sixes in the last over of the match. Initially, the USA’s batting line-up collapsed as the team was reduced to 72/4 in the 20th over.
Thanks to his amazing innings, the USA finished with a final score of 271/9. Jaskaran also became only the second batsman in ODI history to hit six sixes in an over. The first was South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs, who achieved the feat in the 2007 ICC World Cup against the Netherlands’ leg-spinner Dan Van Bunge.
Also, Malhotra became the first-ever United States of America batsman to score an ODI century. The USA cricket took it to their official Twitter account to mention Malhotra’s historic innings.
“Jaskaran Malhotra has joined an exclusive club of international cricketers to hit 6⃣ x 6⃣s in an over with a stunning assault from the final 6 balls of the innings as he becomes the first American to make an ODI
with 173 not out!,”
USA cricket tweeted.
Papua New Guinea had batted first in the match after winning the toss but was bowled out for 158 runs with captain Assad Vala making 61. Nisarg Patel picked 4 wickets and Nosthush Kenjige picked three scalps. The USA chased down the total with 7 wickets in hand thanks to opener Steven Taylor making 82.
