Valdosta takes first game in regional series versus Colquitt County

Mar. 28—VALDOSTA — Returning to Valdosta for another regional series, the Colquitt County Packers traveled to Bazemore Field to start game one against the Wildcats. In a pitchers' duel, the Wildcats were victorious in taking game one of the series.

Skyler Howell had the start for the Wildcats, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts. Howell limited the Packers to two hits and gave out three base on balls.

Colquitt County began with Cam Cook, who pitched five innings and gave up six hits and three runs. Cook had three strikeouts and three walks.

The Wildcats started scoring early off walks in the bottom of the first. Starting with a walk to Turner Samples and singles from Andre Mason and Tony Dinkins, two walks gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead to start the game.

Bowen DeRosso surprised the crowd in the top of the second with a homer on a line drive to left field for a solo run. The pitchers continued to battle through the next couple of innings until the bottom of the fifth.

The Wildcats' big hits were a double from Howell in the bottom of the fifth and an RBI single from Mason to bring Howell home.

The game ended 3-1 in a win for Valdosta High School. The Wildcats will travel to Colquitt County on Friday to complete the series.

When asked about how the series will go, head coach Bart Shuman said, "We played well. We just have to reduce the errors and continue to put the ball in play."
