Vanessa Bryant revealed Sunday she had to take action against an unfortunate consequence of all the social media love she and her family has received since the death of her husband, Kobe, and 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.

Posting a quick note on Instagram, Bryant said she and her 17-year-old daughter, Natalia, have had to block fan pages because of the constant pictures of Kobe and Gianna that would come up on their “Explore” pages.

Bryant made clear the blocking was not out of malice, just to help with her family’s healing.

Bryant’s Instagram page has also been private for a while, possibly for similar reasons.

That’s a very sad, but understandable reason for a move that might have bothered the fans running the accounts. The automated world of social media and algorithms is almost always clumsy when it comes to personal tragedy, and it doesn’t get much worse than the helicopter crash that killed Kobe, Gianna and seven others.

Even with the closed social media circle, Bryant has still found ways to honor her late husband and daughter. She revealed tattoos containing messages from them earlier this week, used Kobe’s memory to speak out against racial injustice and is currently working on the release of a young adult novel written by Kobe before his death, called “Geese Are Never Swans.”
