VAR to be trialled across multiple Premier League games on Saturday

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be trialled across multiple Premier League games for the first time on Saturday.

There were trials during individual games last season and now the league will use it across the five 3pm kick-offs on Saturday, to see how the central VAR hub copes with multiple games going on at once.

It will not have any impact on the actual games, with no communication between VAR officials trialling the system and referees actually at the games.

Despite the Premier League voting against VAR in April – before it was deemed a success during the World Cup – there is still a desire to see it implemented sooner rather than later.

There have already been enough incidents in the first four weekends of the domestic season to suggest that would be the right move too.

This trial is limited to goals, penalty calls, direct red cards and any cases of mistaken identity.

VAR was trialled at 19 different games across the 2017/2018 campaign, a figure which is expected to triple this time around.
