Variety is the spice of life for Fellaini after scoring against 20th different Premier League club

Marouane Fellaini scored his first Premier League goal of the season for Manchester United on Sunday. It was his 8th league goal since moving to Old Trafford in the summer of 2013, and his 32nd since first arriving in England's top flight with Everton back in 2008.

What's impressive about Fellaini's goal return, though, is the breadth of opponents he's scored against. Middlesbrough marked the 20th different Premier League club against which he's found the net.

From his first Everton goal in a game against Aston Villa in his debut season, to opening the scoring at the Riverside Stadium this weekend, the Belgian has now been on the score-sheet against a full division's worth of Premier League teams.

He's still yet to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool, though, which given that he scored for Everton against United, Manchester City and Arsenal and often performed well in the biggest games for the Toffees, might come as something as a surprise.

He's stepped up when called upon for United, too, especially in the home Manchester derby in 2014/15 under the management of Louis van Gaal, and later in last season's FA Cup semi-final against former club Everton when he scored and enjoyed an excellent day all round.

Fellaini has never been popular with most United fans. He has personally and unfairly taken the brunt of the criticism for the club's failed transfer window after David Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson and was even booed at Old Trafford after conceding a late penalty this season.

Yet it remains easy to understand just why Fellaini has remained an important squad player under Jose Mourinho when most expected a swift exit. He's a loyal servant who will always put a solid shift and do everything any manager asks of him as best he can.

It's rarely pretty but it's impossible to argue that he's not effective.
