With rain forecast for Sunday’s Monaco GP, Sebastian Vettel has urged his Aston Martin team to “stay alert” and “make the right decisions”.
Starting only his second race of this season from a top-ten grid slot, the four-time World Champion will line up ninth on the Monte Carlo grid.
It is a grand prix that he has twice won, taking the chequered flag with Red Bull in 2011 and as a Ferrari driver in 2017.
Last season, in his first year with Aston Martin, he scored points with a six-placed finish with points once again being the goal this season.
However, with a 40 percent chance of rain throughout the 78-lap grand prix, although the likelihood of it is decreasing, Vettel says the weather could have the final say.
“No matter how it is, we stay alert. If it rains, we have to make the right decisions,” he told Sky Germany.
“I think the weather will decide the race here.”
Speaking in his team’s post-qualifying press release, he reiterated the role the rain could play in Sunday’s race.
“Finishing Q3 in P9 is a good result,” he said. “It is always important to qualify well in Monaco, so hopefully we can race well from there and make the most of any opportunities to move up the order.
“The weather is the big question mark, though. If it is wet, it can be a real lottery around this track, but it can also make for a fun and entertaining race. I would be surprised if it was a completely wet race, so we might need to be ready for mixed conditions.
“Whatever happens, we will target good points.”
His compatriot Ralf Schumacher is backing the 34-year-old to have a good race.
“Sebastian feels at home here,” said the Sky pundit. “He can make the difference on the street circuits. He likes to do that and he did a great job here.
“It still shows that everything is there as soon as he has the car. And when it rains, he was always good in the rain, there’s maybe more in it than you expect.”
Vettel is chasing what would be only his second top-ten result of this season, the Aston Martin driver having previously scored at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
That race he also qualified inside the top-ten but dropped to P13 in the sprint race before fighting back to finish P8 in the grand prix.
