Cycling: Victorious Valverde dedicates Liege-Bastogne-Liege win to late Scarponi

Michele Scarponi died on a training ride on Saturday and was at the forefront of Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner Alejandro Valverde's mind.

Alejandro Valverde dedicated his Liege-Bastogne-Liege triumph to the late Michele Scarponi after a fourth win at the event.

Astana rider Scarponi lost his life after a collision with a van while on a training ride on Saturday, with a minute's silence held before the race in Belgium on Sunday.

Only the legendary Eddy Merckx can better Valverde's haul of titles at the one-day classic.

But the Movistar cyclist's first thought was for Scarponi.

"This victory is for my friend Michele Scarponi," he said.

Valverde had the legs to hold off the challenge of Quick-Step Floors' Daniel Martin, while Team Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski took third.
