Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick as Sporting Lisbon secured a 4-1 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

The former Coventry City star outshone Erling Haaland on the night, with a sensational display in Manchester United-bound manager Ruben Amorim’s last home game for the Portuguese Champions.

Although Pep Guardiola’s side went ahead early on through Phil Foden, Gyokeres grabbed an equaliser before the break when he was played through, out-muscling and out-pacing his marker before dinking the ball over the keeper from an angle. Maximiliano Araujo scored after the interval before Gyokeres then showed a cool head to score twice from the spot to complete the outstanding comeback to provide the perfect end for Amorim.

Gyokeres’ named was linked with Man United before Amorim’s appointment was confirmed by the Old Trafford club, so it is only natural the speculation has intensified in recent days.

The 26-year-old has plenty of experience in the English leagues following spells with Brighton and Swansea before really making a name for himself in the Championship with Coventry. He then took his career to another level with his move to Sporting.

He now has an impressive 57 goals for the club in all competitions and 12 in his last six games following four strikes against Estrela last Friday.

Up until his equaliser, he wasn’t having a particularly productive evening. Quite aside from wasting an early chance to level when he almost seemed to have too much time and not enough in the same moment as he bore down on the Man City goal, yet snatched at the opportunity and sent his chip straight to Ederson.

“Gyokeres was also wasteful in possession,” reported the BBC ’s Simon Stone, in Lisbon.

“One run took him straight into a crowd of opponents inside the City box when he had team-mates in excellent positions, another routine pass across the area went straight to a blue shirt.

“At that point, it was easy to wonder what the fuss was all about. Gyokeres soon sorted that out. It is probably a good job for Sporting that Amorim has pledged not to take any of their players in the January transfer window.”

The Sky Blues, who have already made £20million on the Swede, stand to earn 10 per cent on any future sale due to a sell-on clause. And with the player having a 100m Euro (£84m) release clause, if he went for that much then Coventry would get the percentage of the difference between £20m and £84m, which would mean £6.4m.
