Viktor Gyokeres sell-on clarity as Coventry City await transfer update
Coventry City chairman Doug King has confirmed that the club did indeed insert a sell-on clause into the deal which saw Viktor Gyokeres swap the Sky Blues for Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2023.
Swedish striker Gyokeres has been a revelation in Portugal and has made himself one of the most sought after centre forwards on the planet; he has returned an astonishing 41 goal contributions for club and country so far this season, including 24 goals for Sporting, who boast a 100% record in the league and top the Portuguese top flight.
Predictably, Gyokeres is a wanted man. Genuine number nines who possess all of the attributes he has demonstrated in recent years - for Sporting and indeed for City - are a rare commodity in football these days and some of the top clubs around Europe have been linked with moves for Gyokeres in the near future.

City sold him last year for £17m but they're likely to financially benefit again if Sporting see fit to part with their prized asset at any stage, because a sell-on was agreed when the original move was being negotiated. What's more is that Sporting will likely be able to command as much as three or four times what they paid to take him away from the CBS Arena in the first instance.
However, King has played down talk of a sizeable cash windfall for the Sky Blues if Gyokeres is sold - and explained where the reason financial benefits come from player development.
“Viktor has gone crazy in terms of how he has performed," King told talkSPORT. "That was a tough negotiation with Sporting Lisbon and if he does move on to somewhere else in his career then we will benefit. I’m not holding my breath. We are not running the club on that basis, but we will take it.
“A large part of that will go to his original club Brighton, everyone seems to think it will go straight in the coffers but it will go down the chain. You need to be bringing them up from your academy to get the full 100 per cent.”
