Villarreal vs Liverpool LIVE!

Liverpool booked their third Champions League final in five seasons after a chaotic 3-2 second-leg win in Villarreal saw them progress 5-2 on aggregate.

While the three-goal cushion may look comfortable this was a test of their nerve and powers of recovery as an awful first half by their standards saw their first-leg advantage wiped out by debut goals in the competition from Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin.

But the half-time introduction of January signing Luis Diaz, who has reinvigorated 2022 for Jurgen Klopp’s side, changed the game - aided and abetted by a distinctly ordinary goalkeeping performance from the hosts’ Geronimo Rulli.

The Argentinian had a hand - or lack of one - in all of Liverpool’s three goals from Fabinho, Diaz and Sadio Mane in 12 second-half minutes and was culpable for at least two. Villarreal’s misery was completed when Etienne Capoue was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Curtis Jones late on.

The Reds will face either Manchester City or Real Madrid in Paris at the end of May.

Some reaction from Jurgen Klopp...

22:42 , Matt Verri

“It’s outstanding, because we made it pretty tricky for ourselves.

“We knew before these kind of things can happen. It’s all about in life how you react when things don’t go your way.

“Conceding a goal after three minutes is obviously not what you wanted. Momentum was on their side, respect to Villarreal - unbelievable what they’ve set up. They put us under pressure over the whole pitch.

“We didn’t play football at all. I told the boys: ‘Yes they have momentum, but they don’t own it. With one situation we can get it back.’

“We have to force ourselves on them. All of a sudden we were in the game, scored goals and made it happen.”

22:35 , Matt Verri

The Liverpool players have been asked if they have a preference for who they face in the final.

Virgil van Dijk - doesn’t mind. Mohamed Salah - he wants Real Madrid.

Revenge on the mind?

What a 45 minutes he had...

22:29 , Matt Verri

What was Klopp’s first-half message?

22:20 , Matt Verri

Virgil van Dijk has revealed Jurgen Klopp simply told his players to be themselves at half-time.

It looked like being a terrible night for Liverpool - they came out after the break and changed all that.

“Play football, play the Liverpool way,” Van Dijk said of the half-time message.

“Play the way we’ve been playing basically all season. Get on the ball, have a lot of movement in the box and behind the high line. But also, show how much we really want to go to the final. That’s how it starts.

“Second-half we dominated and played so well.”

Another nervy semi-final...

22:13 , Matt Verri

It’s been another eventful semi-final tie for Liverpool, to add to their collection in recent years. They won’t care now though!

“We don’t make these Champions League semis easy for ourselves: Roma away, Barca at home and now here,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“They played very well in the first half, but we grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half and did what we needed to do.

“We expected it to be difficult in the first half. Sometimes you can’t control the game how you want to. But we got it done and we’ve booked our ticket to Paris.”

Alexander-Arnold’s post-match reaction...

22:08 , Matt Verri

“We didn’t play in the football in the first half, we didn’t pick up the second balls. They played the game they wanted to and we allowed them to do that. It was difficult for us.

“In the second half we played the way we needed to play and controlled the game a lot better. One bad half over the two legs… we can concede that as long as we get the job done.

“It’s always nice to get the job done on the Tuesday, so we can watch the game tomorrow knowing that we’re already there. It could be another amazing game. Either opponents deserves to get to the final, so I’m excited to see who we’ll get.”

“Paris we are coming"

22:06 , Matt Verri

22:02 , Matt Verri

Villarreal players did a lap of the pitch after the match and got a brilliant reception from the fans.

Disappointing end to this tie for them, it all fell apart in a 12-minute spell.

But they can be so proud of their efforts - they gave Liverpool a real scare. Not many have rattled Jurgen Klopp’s side like that this season.

Goal that capped it all...

What a tie!

It’s a third Champions League final in five seasons for Liverpool. They had to really work for it but in the end it was an absolute cruise.

21:48 , Matt Verri

89 mins: This could be any score now, there’s no defending going on.

Liverpool charge forward, there’s so much space. Mane lays it off to Salah, who is desperate to get his goal. Shoots well wide though as he loses balance.

RED CARD!

21:45 , Matt Verri

86 mins: The wheels have well and truly come off for Villarreal.

Capoue smashes into Jones and that will be a second yellow card for the midfielder. Ugly end this, for the home side.

21:43 , Matt Verri

84 mins: WOW. That’s an absolutely horrible challenge.

Torres has cleaned out Mane on the halfway line. Absolutely dreadful. He can take the yellow card and be very grateful.

21:40 , Matt Verri

81 mins: It’s a complete mess from Villarreal now. Being run ragged.

Torres gives the ball away on the edge of his own box. Mane plays in Henderson, he cuts it back to Jones - brilliant save but Rulli.

Not sure it’s enough to make up for his performance though.

21:38 , Matt Verri

79 mins: About 50 players on the touchline it looks like - we’re about to have a lot of subs.

Henderson, Tsimikas, Jones on... Keita, Robertson, Thiago the three to make way for Liverpool.

21:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Alexander-Arnold into the book, free-kick Villarreal.

Whipped into the box, Pedraza flicks it on... just wide of the far post.

GOAL! Villarreal 2-3 Liverpool | Sadio Mane 74'

21:34 , Matt Verri

LIVERPOOL ARE GOING TO PARIS!

Incredible. They’ve rescued this and in such impressive fashion.

Rulli with another horror show to add to the collection. Keita clips it over the top, Rulli decides to come charging out. No idea why.

Mane goes past him, takes his time and then rolls it into an empty net.

21:32 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Liverpool dominating the ball, knocking it around with ease now. Villarreal look to have run their race.

They’ve dropped right off since the break... combination of instructions and also Liverpool being much better?

Back in charge...

21:31 , Matt Verri

GOAL! Villarreal 2-2 Liverpool | Luis Diaz 67’

21:27 , Matt Verri

HE’S SCORED NOW!

Liverpool have been back to their usual standard since the break and Villarreal are being cut apart.

Alexander-Arnold onto his left foot and curls a wonderful cross into the box, Diaz with the header and Rulli can’t keep it out.

21:25 , Matt Verri

66 mins: That might have sealed it!

Brilliant from Diaz again. Onto the right foot, his shot takes a slight deflection and flicks off the outside of the post. Corner.

Konate wins the header, just wide.

21:23 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Liverpool fans making all the noise now, the visitors comfortably keeping possession.

Villarreal have really dropped off in the second-half... just over 25 minutes to pick it up again.

GOAL! Villarreal 2-1 Liverpool | Fabinho 62'

21:21 , Matt Verri

LIVERPOOL BACK IN FRONT ON AGGREGATE!

They really needed that! It’s terrible goalkeeping, but the visitors won’t care one bit.

Sustained spell of possession, and Salah then pokes the ball through to Fabinho. Takes his time, opts not to square it for his teammates and hammers it at goal. Straight at Rulli... straight through his legs.

21:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Villarreal’s first attack of the half, as Lo Celso pounces on a loose ball. Drives past a couple of players and pulls it back into the box, straight to Van Dijk. He can clear.

Liverpool break quickly with Diaz, who has made a real difference since coming on. Villarreal get plenty of bodies back though.

21:16 , Matt Verri

57 mins: It’s all Liverpool now - a hint of a smile from Klopp.

Keita plays the pass through to Mane. He has to turn back, but then plays a great cross to the back post.

Diaz goes for the acrobatic volley, shanked over the bar.

21:14 , Matt Verri

56 mins: WOODWORK!

As close as Liverpool have come tonight. Alexander-Arnold tries his luck from miles out, it loops up off Coquelin and onto the bar. Behind for a corner. Pressure starting to build...

All the way into the box, out to Thiago. Scuffs it at the goalkeeper.

21:13 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Liverpool have been better since the break, at least causing Villarreal some problems. Home side have dropped off a bit though, now they have something to hold. Might be better still pushing?

No sign of Lo Celso getting on the ball like he did so often in the first-half.

21:10 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Diaz looking to inject a bit of pace, cutting in off the left wing. Past a couple of challenges and goes for goal, immediately blocked.

Worked back out to the right, Alexander-Arnold sends it high over the ball as he looks to play it into the box. Crunched at the same time by Estupinan.

21:07 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Good position this. About 25 yards out, maybe slightly more. Alexander-Arnold and Thiago planning it out.

It’s Alexander-Arnold who clips it in, over Fabinho and it just hits Mane behind him. Wasn’t expecting it.

21:06 , Matt Verri

47 mins: First objective for Liverpool will surely be just to keep the ball better - they couldn’t string the passes together at all in the first-half.

Diaz looks to take on Foyth, shrugged off it though. Keita then goes down and he does win a free-kick.

Back underway!

21:04 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running again.

Change at the break for Liverpool - Jota off, Diaz on. Only surprise is that it’s just the one change.

21:01 , Matt Verri

Possession evenly split in that first-half, 50% each. Five shots for Villarreal, two on target... both goals.

They’ve been so, so much better than they were at Anfield. Emery promised they would be, he wasn’t lying.

Got to think Liverpool will improve significantly on that first-half though. Can’t really be worse.

Dynamic duo...

20:57 , Matt Verri

Capoue and Coquelin combining for a goal? Few in north London would have predicted that....

Villarreal made the perfect start...

20:51 , Matt Verri

FT: Villarreal 2-0 Liverpool (2-2 aggregate)

20:49 , Matt Verri

What an incredible half.

Dia and Coquelin with the goals as Villarreal level up the tie. Who saw this coming?!

Massive team-talk coming up for Klopp. His side have been a mess in the first 45 minutes.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:47 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Coquelin down again, believe it or not. This time he gets the decision... he’s made a swift and miraculous recovery and should be fine to continue.

Two minutes added on.

20:45 , Matt Verri

43 mins: That was really poor from Alexander-Arnold - didn’t respond at all to that run from Coquelin.

Great header though. What a performance this has been from Villarreal - their fans are going mental.

GOAL! Villarreal 2-0 Liverpool | Francis Coquelin 41'

20:43 , Matt Verri

IT’S LEVEL ON AGGREGATE!

Incredible. You can’t say it hasn’t been coming either, Liverpool have been woeful.

Ball stood up to the far post, Coquelin comes charging in and it’s a wonderful header into the top corner. He’s turned his performance around!

Alexander-Arnold barely moved as Coquelin came charging in.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: That was a real opportunity for Villarreal. Moreno’s pass was too heavy, which forced Lo Celso into trying to go round Alisson. Better ball and it was a massive chance.

Keita has been well off the pace for Liverpool, given it away so many times. Bit of a concern is that Moreno looks to be limping a bit... he already has plenty of strapping on.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: HUGE MOMENT!

Liverpool lose it in a terrible position and Villarreal can break. Moreno pokes it through to Lo Celso, who tries to knock it past Alisson and go down.

He wants a penalty... not going to get it. Alisson got all of the way. Bit of Lo Celso too, who will need some treatment.

20:37 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Fabinho all the way back to Alisson, who boots it out of play.

Klopp talking to his coaching staff - they’ll be shocked at what they’ve seen so far. Very rarely, if ever, see Liverpool look like this.

20:35 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Coquelin has had quite the 33 minutes. Four theatrical dives, a couple of unnecessary fouls... and now a step-over attempt that fooled himself.

Can’t say he hasn’t been involved...

20:32 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Free-kick on the halfway line for Villarreal. Looks like they’re going to send this long into the box. Parejo launches it in... over everyone by a mile and into Alisson’s arms.

They’ve done a lot really well so far, but that was not very good!

20:30 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Fabinho slips and as he does so he sticks out a leg... Capoue very happy to go down over it.

Taken quickly over the top for Moreno, but he takes a heavy touch and it rolls out of play for a goal-kick.

20:28 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Brilliant turn from Thiago to find space, then sends it straight out of play though as he looks to set Mane away.

Liverpool have been so sloppy in possession so far - not like them at all.

20:26 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Barely a minute goes by without an offside at the moment. Lo Celso in space 25 yards out, slides a nice pass through to Dia.

Villarreal forward barges Alexander-Arnold off it and gets control, only for the flag to go up.

Jota now briefly clean through on goal for Liverpool, Albiol gets his body back in the way. Rulli briefly has control, Salah pokes it away from the goalkeeper though. Fortunately for Villarreal, foul is given. Hosts a bit lucky to get that.

20:23 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Coquelin finds himself over on the left, with two players to beat. Opts to just win the throw-in instead.

Sent long into the box, drops at the feet of Van Dijk and he hammers it away down the pitch. Time and a place for being cool.... that wasn’t it.

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Keita has Salah and Alexander-Arnold to his right, goes for goal himself. Barely makes it behind for a goal-kick... safe to say he didn’t catch that one very well.

Coquelin has collapsed in a bit of an embarrassing heap once again, holding his head. Referee tells him to get up, which he swiftly does. Miraculous recovery.

Nice ball then over the top for Mane, but he’s just offside.

20:18 , Matt Verri

16 mins: So much action already in this match. Lovely ball into the Liverpool box from the left wing, Moreno gets up at the back post and heads it powerfully at goal.

Straight into Robertson’s face. Left-back didn’t know much about it but it did the job!

20:16 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Nearly from Thiago, who fires just over from the edge of the box.

Wouldn’t have counted though, referee had already blown. Parejo very fortunate to win a free-kick, he was caught on the ball by good work from Keita.

20:14 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Just wide!

Liverpool do look rattled. Coquelin down in the box, catches an arm from Keita. Not sure why he went down like he’d been hit by a bus though.

Comes out to Parejo, drags his shot wide. Decent effort.

20:13 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Liverpool free-kick in a good position, just about too far out for a shot though.

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold standing over it... whipped in, Jota directs it wide. He wants a corner but not going to get it.

No rush now for Villarreal - even if it’s still like this after 80 minutes, the Reds will be very nervy.

20:10 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Capoue clips a long ball over the top, Dia is onto it. Alexander-Arnold briefly halts his progress but Villarreal quickly win it back.

Torres then sends the ball straight out of play to slow the momentum a bit.

20:07 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Emery erupted when that goal went in, as did the home fans. They certainly believe now.

Lo Celso shoves into Thiago - free-kick given but it’s already so much better in terms of intent from the hosts.

GOAL! Villarreal 1-0 Liverpool | Boulaye Dia 3’

20:05 , Matt Verri

IT REALLY IS GAME ON NOW!

Great ball into the box, Capoue makes the run to the back post. He sends it straight back across goal and Dia is there to steer it into an empty net.

Well well well!

20:04 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Feels like the Villarreal centre-backs have already seen more of the ball tonight than they did in the 90 minutes at Anfield. Passing it between each other comfortably.

Loose pass back to Rulli though and he has to slide to stop it going behind for a corner.

KICK-OFF!

20:02 , Matt Verri

We are underway in Villarreal!

19:58 , Matt Verri

Here we go...

Players are out onto the pitch. Liverpool 90 minutes away from their third Champions League final in five seasons.

19:55 , Matt Verri

Rain has stopped in Villarreal thankfully, so pitch should be absolutely fine.

Not the biggest of stadiums but the atmosphere is brilliant. Standard ‘hold up these cards on your seats, it’s a big game’ behaviour too.

19:50 , Matt Verri

Just ten minutes to go until kick-off now.

If Liverpool get the first goal early on, this could turn into a bit of a cruise for them. But if Villarreal can halve that aggregate deficit, it really is game on.

Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match thoughts...

19:41 , Matt Verri

“They are 2-0 down so we expect them to give it a go. We expect we will suffer in football moments tonight - they will go for it, they will try it but we will go for it as well, so we will see.”

Another goal for Mane tonight?

19:37 , Matt Verri

19:31 , Matt Verri

Liverpool and Champions League semi-finals normally result in goals.

In 2018, it was 7-6 on aggregate against Roma, with the Italian side’s 4-2 win in the second leg not enough to go through.

A year later, it was that incredible Anfield comeback against Barcelona as Liverpool won 4-0 at home.

Drama and goals tonight? Hopefully!

19:21 , Matt Verri

Weather is miserable but the home fans are out in force!

They’re going to be producing a brilliant atmosphere - will it be enough to inspire Villarreal to a big comeback?

Emery: Liverpool will suffer

19:06 , Matt Verri

Speaking after the first-leg defeat, Unai Emery was confident his side would be able to produce a more positive result on home soil.

He’s got Gerard Moreno back and in the starting lineup - a lot of pressure on him to make a big impact!

“2-0 is a good difference for them, for us not a good result but we will try to dream and do something different in our home,” Emery said at Anfield.

“The match next week will be very different than tonight. It is very important in our home to change something, maybe tactically. They are going to suffer more than tonight.”

18:52 , Matt Verri

There’s been heavy rainfall today in Villarreal - sounds like the ball was barely bouncing on the pitch when the officials went out a bit earlier to look at conditions.

No concern at the moment for the match though, should all be going ahead as scheduled in a little over an hour.

So Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Fabinho, Thiago and Salah all come back into the starting XI for Liverpool as expected. Big decision for Klopp was Jota or Diaz in the front three - he’s gone for Jota.

Keita also keeps his place after scoring against Newcastle, with Henderson among the substitutes.

Huge boost for Villarreal as Moreno returns to the side. With Dia and Lo Celso starting too, the hosts will be hoping to cause that Liverpool backline a few more problems.

Villarreal team

18:42 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Rulli, Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Estupinan, Parejo, Capoue, Coquelin, Lo Celso, Dia, Moreno

Subs: Asenjo, Jorgensen, Gaspar, Alcacer, Iborra, Chukwueze, Trigueros, Pena, Mandi, Gomez, Pedraza, Aurier

Liverpool team

18:38 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Keita, Thiago; Salah, Mane, Jota

Subs: Kelleher, Milner, Gomez, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Minamino, Tsimikas, Diaz, Origi, Matip, Elliott

Alexander-Arnold targeting history

18:32 , Matt Verri

Trent Alexander-Arnold is targeting an historic end to the season with Liverpool.

With the Carabao Cup already in the bag, the Reds are potentially seven matches, and seven wins, away from sealing a quadruple.

He said: “When you are staring down the barrel and looking at more trophies, where if we win every game we are looking at more silverware, that is what we are looking at. These kinds of games are exciting for us.

“This time last year we were trying to fight back into the top four and secure the Champions League. Now we are second in the league – a point off [Manchester] City – and in the FA Cup final. Who can complain? This is a very special season for us all and hopefully we will see it through and at the end we will be in the history books again.”

Liverpool braced for Villarreal storm

18:23 , Matt Verri

In his press conference yesterday, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp joked that a younger version of himself would have been furious just to be asked whether this semi-final tie is already over.

He has seen too much, both he and Liverpool involved in too many comebacks - usually as perpetrator - from more perilous positions than the one Villarreal find themselves in, to entertain that kind of talk.

Still, Klopp’s team selection for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle suggested that beneath the obligatory lip service, cliched chatter of it being “only half-time”, he genuinely feels the job is not done, with Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara all rotated for what was a must-win game.

First-leg recap...

18:16 , Matt Verri

It wasn’t particularly pretty, but Liverpool got the job done at Anfield last week.

A 2-0 lead on aggregate puts them in complete control and means Villarreal, at some point at least, will have to really go for it.

Would be a surprise if that happened right from the off though...

Less than two hours to kick-off!

18:09 , Matt Verri

Prediction

18:03 , Matt Verri

Villarreal’s gameplan totally failed at Anfield, with no shots on target, barely any possession and next to no opportunities to hit on the break.

Untroubled Liverpool were entirely comfortable and should unquestionably have won by more as they serenely controlled and dominated proceedings.

The wily Emery will have to make big tactical changes for the second leg as they need to put Liverpool under far more pressure from the outset.

However, their chances of breaching a mean defence that have now kept four successive clean sheets across all competitions appear slim.

Villarreal need to push on and take the initiative in front of their own fans, which will inevitably leave plenty of space in behind for the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz to exploit.

Liverpool to win, 2-0.

Liverpool team news

17:54 , Matt Verri

Liverpool will remain without Roberto Firmino tonight, though the Brazilian forward is now back running after nursing a foot issue and is set to travel to Spain with his team-mates.

Divock Origi will be assessed after missing the win over Newcastle through non-Covid illness, though Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas are available again.

Klopp made five changes in total at St James’ Park, with Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate all moving to the bench.

That quintet should return to the starting lineup against Villarreal, though it’s a difficult juggling act with Tottenham visiting Anfield on Saturday evening and the FA Cup Final against Chelsea now less than two weeks away.

Klopp is not expecting any players to miss out with a stomach bug that has been in camp of late.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago; Mane, Salah, Diaz

Villarreal team news

17:47 , Matt Verri

Villarreal boss Emery made eight changes against Alaves over the weekend, with only Samuel Chukwueze, Dani Parejo and Pau Torres retaining their starting berths from Anfield.

Former Liverpool full-back Alberto Moreno remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury, but a major boost should come with the return of key striker Gerard Moreno, who sat out the first leg with a hamstring complaint.

Raul Albiol and ex-Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin have both shaken off knocks, though Arnaut Danjuma is now struggling with a foot problem after missing training on Monday.

Predicted Villarreal XI: Rulli, Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Estupinan, Parejo, Capoue, Coquelin, Lo Celso, Chukwueze, Gerard
