Vincent Kompany: I always feel in big moments I will do something

Manchester City top of the table after Vincent Kompany screamer sinks Leicester City
Vincent Kompany scored a remarkable goal to drive Manchester City towards retaining the Premier League title.

Vincent Kompany always felt he was going to have a big impact on Manchester City’s crucial game with Leicester.

The City skipper thundered in a 25-yard effort to put his side back at the top of the Premier League with one game of the season remaining.

Although Kompany has never scored a goal for Man City from outside the box since his arrival in 2008, the Belgian revealed he always scores goals like that in training.

“I hadn’t scored this season but I always feel in big moments that I’m going to do something, I don’t know if it’s a header or what.

“Today was a little bit of frustration, everyone was saying ‘don’t shoot, don’t shoot’ and I could really hear it; I thought hold on a second, I’ve not come this far in my career for young players to tell me if I can take a shot, and I just had a go!

“I’ve scored goals like that in training! It’s 15 years I’ve been in top-level football, midfielders telling me ‘don’t shoot, play the ball wide’ and every time I miss.

“For 15 years I’ve been saying ‘I promise you, one day I’m going to have a shot from outside the box and I’m going to score a goal and you’re going to be really happy with that one’.

“It’s a big goal, we’ve not achieved anything but it was an important win against a very, very strong team.”

Guardiola was quick to congratulate Kompany at full-time

Pep Guardiola was quick to laud Kompany’s goal and his habit of scoring big goals, as he did against Manchester United late in the 2011/2012 season and against West Ham on the final day two years after that.

“An extraordinary goal, definitely,” Guardiola added. “Kompany has been here more than 10 years and he has helped with an incredible generation of players like Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta, create with other players like Hart and Zabaleta, they create this club.

“Vincent when he stepped forward in the big moments when he is fit is an incredible player.”
