England skipper Joe Root asserted that his team is desperate to bounce back in the Headingley Test against India.

England are coming through a shocking defeat of 151-runs against Virat Kohli and his men at Lord’s. A batting collapse by the hosts in the final two sessions of the last day allowed India to seal a win and take a 1-0 lead in the five Tests.

We’ve got to be genuine to ourselves: Joe Root

The first match in Nottingham ended in a draw after rain showers spoiled the fifth day’s gameplay. Root stressed on making a comeback in the Test series and urged his team to give their utmost best irrespective of the opposition’s approach in the game.

“We have got three massive games to play in this series, there’s a lot to play for. And you know we’re desperate to bounce back strongly,” Root said in a virtual press conference.

“We’ve got to be genuine to ourselves, genuine to how we are as individuals and how we are collectively and be as good as we can, the way that we go. Virat’s team will play how they play, I just want us to go out and be the best version of ourselves,” he added.

We’ve done some good learning off the back of the last game: Joe Root

With 386 runs from four innings, Root has scored the majority of runs in the England batting line-up and only Jonny Bairstow has managed to contribute some handful of runs.

England were bowled out for 120 in the second innings at Lord’s against India, as Root top-scored with 33. The England captain urged his colleagues to step up and build substantial partnerships in order to post huge totals.

“I think there were always conversations you always try to find one percenter in ways you can deal with different situations. We’ve done some good learning off the back of the last game I think we could have managed certain areas differently, me as the captain, we could have gone about things slightly differently,” Root said.

“The most important thing about batting in Test cricket revolves around big partnerships, when two guys back for a period of time the game can look completely different. And that’s got to be our focus as a batting group. Starting your innings in England can be the hardest thing to do,” he added.

England will play the third Test against India on Wednesday (August 25) in Leeds.
