Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has backed Arne Slot to be a success at Liverpool. Asked to reassure fans, he felt '100 per cent' able to do so.

Van Dijk has spent the weekend in Monaco, getting shown around by compatriot and world champion Max Verstappen. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been in Monte Carlo, in his capacity as part-owner of Alpine Racing.

After the full-back faced questions from the media about Slot's incoming arrival, Van Dijk has now been given the same treatment. He spoke to Sky Sports about the changes at Liverpool and the expectations he has for the future.

Asked if Liverpool could continue its recent successes, Van Dijk was optimistic. "Let's hope so," he said. "Obviously I have full trust in the club and the decisions going forward.

"It's exciting as well. Obviously change so always a bit unknown but I've got full confidence and I'm looking forward to the new season already."

The defender was then asked if he could reassure fans that the good times would continue. He inserted a note of caution, but was nonetheless emphatic in his response.

"One hundred percent, but success is not guaranteed. That's pretty obvious. But we've got to work our socks off in order to make it happen and we have a good coach that's coming in, good backroom staff and we have a very good team so let's see what happens."

Van Dijk had already sung the praises of Slot ahead of the Dutchman's appointment. He told Viaplay, via the BBC, that the Feyenoord boss was among the best in the country.

"I find it hard to answer of course, but I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at this moment," he said in April. "I think the way of playing and the philosophy he has, that he could be a Liverpool coach."

Liverpool.com says: Liverpool will now find out if Slot has what it takes to be the Liverpool coach. His appointment in place of Jürgen Klopp has been finalized and formalized, with pre-season set to get underway at the start of July.

Van Dijk is right: there is something exciting about a new era, even though Klopp will be so hard to match. It seems he has confidence in Slot, as well as a desire to work hard to ensure that this next chapter is equally successful for Liverpool.
