Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk couldn't resist a wry smile as he spotted Mohamed Salah doing a rare interview with reporters. The Egyptian dropped bombshell comments on his future at Anfield as he admitted being left "disappointed" not to have made a breakthrough in talks.

The 32-year-old spoke on the back of yet another match-winning display in the Reds shirt with his second-half brace helping Liverpool to a 3-2 win away at Southampton. Saints, who are at the foot of the Premier League table, made it far from straight forward for Arne Slot's side after scoring either side of the break to send the Reds to within 15 minutes of a second defeat under the Dutchman.

However, Salah nipped in to snatch the ball away from Alex McCarthy before the Egyptian fired home his 10th league goal of the campaign to send Liverpool eight points clear at the top. As he made headlines for his heroics, this morning quotes emerged from his post-match chat with assembled reporters as his contract enters the final six months.

"Well, we are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I'm probably more out than in," Salah said. "You know I have been in the club for many years.

"There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future.

"I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans' hands. Let's wait and see. Of course [no offer is disappointing], yeah. I'm not going to retire soon so I'm just playing, focusing on the season and I'm trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I'm disappointed but we will see.

"I'm very professional. Everybody can see my work ethic. I'm just trying to enjoy my football and I will play at the top level as long as possible. I'm just doing my best because this is who I am and I try to give it all for myself and for the club. We will see what happens next."

In fresh footage of the Egyptian speaking in the mixed zone, Van Dijk - who is also out of contract in the summer - emerges and offers a wry smile at his Liverpool teammate while Salah added: "As you can see, I'm very professional and everyone sees my work. I just try to enjoy my football and I will play top level as long as possible. Me and this man (Virgil van Dijk)."

Vin Dijk is also out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to pen to paper on a new deal. On spotting his teammate speaking to reporters, the Liverpool captain quickly headed over and listened in to what was being said.

Both Van Dijk and Salah, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold, are free to speak to overseas clubs from January 1 if they do not sign new deals with Liverpool before then.
