Vitesse vs Tottenham LIVE: Europa Conference League result, final score and reaction tonight

Vitesse vs Tottenham LIVE: Europa Conference League result, final score and reaction tonight

Tottenham’s decision to leave their big guns at home saw them lose 1-0 to Vitesse Arnhem in Group G of Europa Conference League.

The likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Cristiano Romero and Hugo Lloris did not travel to Holland with Sunday’s clash at West Ham in mind and a second string were undone by Maximilian Wittek’s 78th-minute strike.

The side Nuno Espirito Santo picked still had nine international players, but they were never really in the game and Bryan Gil’s shot that hit the crossbar early in the second half was their only moment of note.

Last time Tottenham played in Holland they enjoyed one of the most famous nights in their history as Lucas Moura’s hat-trick against Ajax sent them through to the Champions League final.

This time the Johan Cruijff ArenA was nothing but a stop on the trainline between Amsterdam and Arnhem and that Moura miracle must seem a long time ago as Spurs now compete in the third tier of European football.

Nuno has shown the competition respect so far, but made it clear where his priorities lay, leaving the entire XI that played 90 minutes at Newcastle last weekend at home to train ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to the Hammers.

With the return fixture in a fortnight and then a trip to the weakest team in the competition NS Mura to come, the Portuguese decided that leaving his big guns back in London for this game was a risk worth taking.

It was a gamble because this was a big night for Vitesse, who sold out their GelreDome stadium for the first time in seven years.

Before kick-off their partisan fans held up a banner reading “For the city, the colours and our club: This is our night” and, fresh from a derby win over NEC Nijmegen at the weekend, they started with intent.

Nikolai Baden Frederiksen forced Pierluigi Gollini into a save with his feet after being played in in the third minute and then Jacob Rasmussen flashed a header just wide from a corner.

Unsurprisingly given the amount of changes, Spurs were not up to much in an attacking sense in the first half, with teenage striker Dane Scarlett up against it in a lone role in attack.

They immediately showed more after the break and were within inches of taking the lead in the 47th minute.

Giovani Lo Celso showed why he is becoming a key player for Argentina as he went on an enterprising dribble before laying it off for Gil, whose first-time shot rattled the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Spurs who were pinned further and further back as the second half wore on, with Eli Dasa twice going close with efforts from distance, the second effort bringing a smart stop out of Gollini.

It was no surprise when the goal came 12 minutes from time as Wittek brilliantly volleyed home Dasa’s cross from the edge of the area to send the home crowd wild.

Jarrod Bowen shines as West Ham dispatch Genk to extend Europa League party

22:20 , Michael Jones

While West Ham’s last Europa League home game felt like a full-blown festival, Thursday evening’s fixture looked set to be the house party on a night when the best people had made other plans.

Of course, there was the keen group gathered in the corner – on this occasion, Genk’s travelling supporters – undeterred by the outdated playlist and underwhelming snack choice, but the most engaging attendees had stayed home. That was, until they walked in the door just in time to inject life into the party and rescue the evening.

For just minutes before West Ham’s group-stage hosting of Belgian side Genk, the London Stadium filled out, showing that fans of the east London club are rightly refusing to take their presence in Europe for granted.

Nor are West Ham’s players, who evidenced that fact here with an impressive 3-0 win to retain top spot in Group H.

Jarrod Bowen’s reaction

22:17 , Michael Jones

Jarrod Bowen spoke to BT Sport after the game to talk about his goal, playing through the middle and his journey to European football via non-league. He said:

It’s good. I should have had one in the first half. Even the one I scored I probably didn’t finish it right but I said before the game I bet I’ll score when I scuff it! But if you don’t shoot you don’t score. I’m buzzing with my first Europa League goal.

“Up front I feel like you can run in behind and play in both sides. You can go down the left and the right or drop off.

“I feel like I’m improving in that position. Being a target man is not my game at all but I think wherever I just love playing.

“It means everything, looking back and playing non-league... I remember scoring my first goal for Alfreton at 16/17. Now to score in the Europa League is a dream. I’m loving every minute.”

West Ham continued their European cruise with a thumping 3-0 win over Belgian side Genk.

West Ham are already six points clear at the top of Group H and could even secure qualification as group winners in their next match, in Genk in a fortnight, with two games to spare.

Reaction from Ben Johnson

22:06 , Michael Jones

Ben Johnson spoke to BT Sport after the match to give his reaction to West Ham’s impressive win. He said:

It’s a great feeling. We work tirelessly as a back four and do a lot of drills in training. It’s second nature now really. We are compact and we work as a back four. You can get drawn out but we keep our heads and respect teams. We were solid, strong and we’re looking good so far.

“I think we have three tough games left. We know what we’re up against so we’ll keep battling on.

“When you’re out of the team you have to be ready for these opportunities. You only get a day or so to prepare your head. I feel great and good that I’m back in the team. I’m enjoying my football.

“The [fans] see that there’s a good team this season and one that with give 100% always, but we will keep imrpving and keep enjoying these games. We’re not used to this so we will relish the opportunities we get.”

West Ham United vs Genk: Five things we learned as Hammers cruise in Europa League

22:05 , Michael Jones

Here’s what we learned from a very impressive performance and 3-0 victory:

Five things we learned as West Ham cruise to Europa League win

Hammers yet to concede

21:58 , Michael Jones

West Ham are only the second English side to win each of their first three group games in a single Europa League campaign without conceding, after Spurs in 2013-14.

The last team from any nation to do so won the competition, Sevilla in 2019-20. A sign of things to come?

Cresswell on top form

21:55 , Michael Jones

Aaron Cresswell had a great game for West Ham. He was a constant threat down the left side and provided two assists from set pieces.

Full-time: West Ham 3 - 0 Genk

21:50 , Michael Jones

90+2 mins: Job done for West Ham. Two goals in two minutes in the second half killed the game off and made the Hammers’ lead unassailable.

They’ve won every game so far in the Europa League and have yet to concede a goal. It’s a good confidence builder for David Moyes’ team ahead of a clash with Tottenham at the weekend.

West Ham 3 - 0 Genk

West Ham 3 - 0 Genk

21:24 , Michael Jones

65 mins: Arteaga swings a cross into the box from the left but can’t find a teammate. Ito does a good recovery job to keep the ball in play but he’s forced to pass it backwards by Cresswell. Genk play the ball inside and give it to Thorsvedt. He shoots from range and hoofs the ball over the goal.

West Ham 3 - 0 Genk

21:20 , Michael Jones

62 mins: The wheels have come off for Genk. The second goal was always going to be the crucial one and so it has proved. West Ham are fizzing the ball around now. Cresswell sends it up to Lanzini who knocks it across to Bowen. Bowen slides a through ball into the area but Lanzini is beaten to it by the goalkeeper.

21:17 , Michael Jones

58 mins: It’s all over now! Bongonda gives the ball away to Bowen who plays a one-two with Lanzini to get past the Genk midfield. West Ham 1 - 0 Genk

20:57 , Michael Jones

As it stands West Ham are going to take a sxi point lead at the top of Group H with three games to play. Genk started the first half as the stronger team but West Ham’s control in the middle of the pitch took the initiative away from the Belgian side and allowed the Hammers to work the ball into the wide areas.

West Ham’s biggest problem is not getting men into the box, they’ve put a lot of balls into the area but have no-one in there to get close to them.

Half-time: West Ham 1 - 0 Genk

20:50 , Michael Jones

45+2 mins: It wasn’t the most electrifying first half we’ve seen in the Europa League this season but West Ham kept on probing Genk’s defences and finally found the breakthrough right at the end of the first half.

The next goal could be vital, if the Hammers score again they’ll cruise to victory but if Genk find an equaliser if could turn into a nervous second half for West Ham.

GOAL! West Ham 1 - 0 Genk (Dawson, 45+1’)⚽️

20:48 , Michael Jones

45+1 mins: Killer blow for Genk on the stroke of half-time. Dawson meets a corner ball from Cresswell and loops a header into the far top corner. Great set piece from the Hammers who have the lead!

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:47 , Michael Jones

45 mins: Chance! Yarmolenko passes the ball to Vlasic who sends it out to Cresswell on the left side once again. His ball into the six-yard box is low and pacey but there’s only Bowen up to reach. He stretches but the ball hits Lucumi and Vandevoordt has to dive low to keep out the deflection.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:45 , Michael Jones

42 mins: Bongonda’s just come alive over the last few minutes or so. He does a nice little flick to get the ball around Soucek before he sprints down the line. He passes it back to Arteaga whose cross isn’t great and comes straight to Cresswell for West Ham.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:40 , Michael Jones

39 mins: Close! Cresswell is sent down the left side of the box once again and floats a cross to the back post. Soucek arrives to win the header but Arteaga does just enough to put him off and the ball skims off the top of his head and comes out to Bongonda.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:39 , Michael Jones

36 mins: Bongonda shifts the ball over to the left of the box and wins a corner when Rice puts his low cross behind. Genk play it short to Arteaga who curls one into the middle of the box. Areola comes out to claim it but get nowhere near the ball as Onuachu leaps to win the header. He loops it goalwards but the effort drops agonisingly wide of the left-hand post!

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:35 , Michael Jones

33 mins: Genk have been defensively solid so far but are finding it tough to transition into attack. Ito has been their main ball carrier over on the right wing but he doesn’t have many options coming forward with him and inevitably West Ham recover possession.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:32 , Michael Jones

30 mins: West Ham are starting to turn it on. Cresswell’s getting into a lot of space over on the left side and just needs bodies in the box to meet his crosses.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:27 , Michael Jones

It bounces off his standing leg and falls to Cresswell who belts it wide of goal.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:24 , Michael Jones

24 mins: Preciado got clattered by Soucek as he won the aerial ball and stayed down. He gets a check over from the medics but is fine to play on.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:20 , Michael Jones

18 mins: West Ham look like they’re missing the focal point that Michail Antonio provides when he leads the line. Their attacking play tonight seems to involve sharp, cutting passes into the box or relying on the wide men making runs past defenders. It’s not quite working so far tonight.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:15 , Michael Jones

15 mins: Maarten Vandevoordt punts a long ball straight down the middle as Bongonda flies across from the right. Areola spots the developing danger and storms out of his box to get to the ball first. He does but gets cleaned out by Genk forward as West Ham clear their lines.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:13 , Michael Jones

13 mins: Cresswell wins a corner for West Ham. The left-back curls the ball into the box himself but Onuachu rises above everyone to head it clear.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:11 , Michael Jones

10 mins: Genk score! Ito is played in behind down the right. He collects the pass and drives into the right side of the box before squaring it across to Paul Onuachu. He messes up his attempted shot but the ball loops into the air and Theo Bongonda dives at the loose ball to head it into the back of the net.

The Genk players set off in celebration but the offside flag is up and a VAR replay shows Ito was marginally offside in the build-up. The goal gets chalked off.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:09 , Michael Jones

9 mins: Tomas Soucek sends a diagonal ball out to Ben Johnson who gets forward down the right side. He attempts to volley a short pass into the box for Andriy Yarmolenko but gets it all wrong and kicks the ball straight out of play. Yarmolenko applauds the idea though.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:07 , Michael Jones

6 mins: A long throw down the right side almost plays Kristian Thorstvedt into the box as he sneaks behind Aaron Cresswell. Issa Diop comes across to win the ball though and punts it out of play. No nonsense defending.

West Ham 0 - 0 Genk

20:03 , Michael Jones

3 mins: Jarrod Bowen carries the ball down the right side for West Ham is is clumsily taken out by Jhon Lucumi. Bowen himself swings the free kick into the area and finds Rice who can’t quite bring it under control and Genk manage to boot the ball clear.

20:01 , Michael Jones

Kick off: Both teams take the knee before Genk kick off the match. They work the ball down the right wing and boot it up to Junya Ito who strays offside as the pass comes over the top.

West Ham vs Genk

19:57 , Michael Jones

Here come the teams. Declan Rice leads out West Ham at the London Stadium. The Hammers are top of Group H after two 2-0 wins over Dinamo Zagreb and Rapid Wien.

If they win tonight they’ll go six points clear at the top.

Moyes on Genk

19:50 , Michael Jones

More from David Moyes who is expecting a difficult game tonight against the Belgian side. He spoke to BT Sport before kick off saying:

It’s a tough game but I’m confident if we do well, we can get a result. We want to continue the momentum with the way we’ve been playing in this competition and also in the Premier League.”

Moyes on West Ham’s Europa campaign

19:48 , Michael Jones

West Ham have won their opening two games of the Europa League this season and are hoping to make it three from three. Manager David Moyes has named a strong side as he aims to reach the knockout stages by qualifying from top of the group. He said:

I’m really enjoying it. We’re a really happy club at the moment. Everyone’s enjoying the league games and Europe and I have to say I’m really enjoying the European experience.

"I want the players to go far in it. It would be great if we could top the group, but trying to make sure that we go through would be the main aim at the moment."

West Ham vs Genk

19:45 , Michael Jones

Reaction from Arnhem to come but the focus moves over to the London Stadium where West Ham prepare to host Genk.

Here’s a reminder of the teams:

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Diop, Dawson, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Vlasic, Lanzini, Yarmolenko, Bowen.

Group G standings

19:43 , Michael Jones

That defeat drops Spurs down to third in Group G after Rennes defeated Mura 2-1. The French side are first with seven points, Vitesse have six and Tottenham three.

There’s still three games to go in the group stages so Spurs have time to pull it back but they’ll need to play a whole lot better than they did tonight.

Full-time: Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:36 , Michael Jones

90+4 mins: There goes the final whistle. Vitesse beat Tottenham in the Europa Conference League. The Vitesse fans go wild in the GelreDome. This is the first time this team has beaten an English opponent.

Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:35 , Michael Jones

90+2 mins: Dele Alli flicks a ball into the area for Markanday but Schubert gets to the ball first, grabs hold and falls on top of it. He ekes out a few vital seconds for Vitesse as they look to hold on to this lead.

Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:32 , Michael Jones

90 mins: Four minutes of added time to play. It’s not going to be enough for Tottenham. They could play an extra 45 minutes and I don’t think they’d score an equaliser. It’s been a poor performance from Nuno’s men this evening.

Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:29 , Michael Jones

87 mins: Vitesse’s hero Maximilian Wittek gets a standing ovation as he’s replaced with Tomas Hajek. Wittek has four goals in European competition this season and has probably given the Dutch side a vital three points.

Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:26 , Michael Jones

84 mins: Vitesse break on the counter-attack with Frederiksen bringing the ball through the middle. Openda and Darfalou give him options to the left and right but Frederiksen goes it alone and belts a shot from range well over the crossbar.

Bazoer and Winks get into a bit of argy bargy off the ball and the referee has to come over to put a stop to it.

Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham

19:23 , Michael Jones

81 mins: That goal could be crucial. Vitesse weathered a flurry from Tottenham at the beginning of this half but have grown in confidence since. Of the two teams they’ve been the one that has looked more likely to score. Their fans are cheering and singing very loudly now. They believe their team is going to win this one.

GOAL! Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham (Wittek, 78’)⚽️

19:20 , Michael Jones

78 mins: Finally! The deadlock is broken! Wittek sends the ball up to Openda and continues his run into the box. Openda flicks it over to the right wing where Dasa makes a forward run. He brings the ball under control before chipping it to the front edge of the box where Wittek has drifted into space. He hits the dropping ball on the volley and smokes it wonderfully into the near bottom corner to give Vitesse the lead!

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:19 , Michael Jones

77 mins: Nuno Espirito Santo takes no chances on Dane Scarlett and replaces him with 20-year-old Dilan Markanday.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:17 , Michael Jones

75 mins: Yellow card for Scarlett! A long ball comes up to the striker who knocks it past Bazoer. He turns quickly and chases after the ball as Schubert comes flying out of his box. The Vitesse goalkeeper gets to the ball as Scarlett dives into a challenge. Schubert jumps over the striker’s legs and theatrically throws himself to ground convincing the referee to pull out a card.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:14 , Michael Jones

72 mins: Wittek swings a free kick into the box and attempts to pick out Doekhi in the centre of the box. Tottenham win the first ball but it drops to Openda. He loads up to shoot but the offside flag goes up against the Vitesse captain from the initial cross and Spurs win a free kick of their own.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:11 , Michael Jones

69 mins: Dasa’s getting himself into decent positions when he comes in from the right side. Vitesse work the ball out to him and he takes another shot from outside the box. This one is one target but Gollini smothers it low down to his right.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:09 , Michael Jones

66 mins: Dele Alli plays the ball out of his own final third and lays it off to Lo Celso. He tries to spur Tottenham into a counter-attack by driving into the midfield but Bero lunges in and wins back the ball.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:06 , Michael Jones

63 mins: Vitesse’s final ball into the box hasn’t been great. They’ve attempted a few crosses from the right but nothing has beaten the Tottenham centre-backs.

Close! Darfalou slips the ball to Dasa who’s forward on the right. They’ve got an overload on as Dasa drives towards the box. He shoots just as he reaches the front edge and narrowly sends the effort wide of the near post.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

19:02 , Michael Jones

60 mins: Back to Arnhem where Tottenham’s early momentum at the start of the second half has been slowly eroded away by Vitesse. The home side have taken over possession and the game has developed into a midfield battle.

Line-ups: West Ham vs Genk

19:00 , Michael Jones

Following the conclusion of this game we’ll be focusing of West Ham’s next outing in the Europa League as they take on Genk. Kick off for that one is at 8pm and here are the starting line-ups:

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Diop, Dawson, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Vlasic, Lanzini, Yarmolenko, Bowen.

Genk XI: Vandevoordt, Preciado, Cuesta, Lucumi, Arteaga, Heynen, Hrosovsky, Bongonda, Ito, Onuachu.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:57 , Michael Jones

54 mins: Tottenham have been a bit more aggressive since the restart. Scarlett is throwing his weight around and trying impose himself on the Vitesse defenders. Doekhi is hit by the forward but not before he slips the ball away to Tronstad. Tronstad passes it out to Wittek on the left side and he knocks the ball down the line to give Openda a chase. Sanchez gets back and slides across the Vitesse striker, winning the ball and clearing it for Spurs.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:53 , Michael Jones

51 mins: Dane Scarlett is penalised after taking on Bazoer over on the right side of the box. The defender sticks to Scarlett, marshalling him wider and wider before eventually shoving him to ground and toppling over him. I’m not sure Scarlett’s done a lot wrong there but Vitesse are given the free kick.

OFF THE BAR! Gil comes close to an opener!

18:51 , Michael Jones

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

48 mins: Great play from Tottenham. Lo Celso is given the ball just inside his own half. He turns and shimmies past a Vitesse midfielder before driving the ball up the opponents box. There’s no way into the area for him so he squares the ball to Bryan Gil who hits a first-time left-footed shot beautifully. It’s got swerve and dip but just not enough as it smacks into the crossbar and bounces away!

Second half: Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:48 , Michael Jones

Kick off: Can Tottenham get a goal in this second half. Judging by the first 45 minutes one goal may be enough for either team to claim all three points.

The visitors get the match back underway. Bergwijn flicks the ball up to Scarlett who chests it down and spins Rasmussen only for the offside flag to go up.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:41 , Michael Jones

Both teams made mistakes during that first 45 minutes. Tottenham gave the ball away countless times and never seemed to get out of first gear.

Nuno Espirito Santo will want more urgency, more intent and sharper passing in the second half.

A shot on target would be nice too.

Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:38 , Michael Jones

The other Group G game of the night has Rennes 2-1 up against Mura meaning that as things stand Tottenham are dropping to second place in the table.

They need to win Group G to avoid a play-off match to get into the knockout stages.

Half-time: Vitesse 0 - 0 Tottenham

18:33 , Michael Jones

45+1 mins: Nuno Espirito Santo has named a second string starting XI for Tottenham and it’s clear. The players haven’t quite gelled in attack with the visitors only having two shots in the first half.
