Wakefield suffer fresh blows to key duo
Injuries haven’t been kind to Wakefield in recent weeks, and they will be without two more players for next Sunday’s trip to Salford.
Mark Applegarth’s side are still searching for their first win of the season after losing 26-0 at Leeds on Friday night.
Trinity lost star winger Lewis Murphy to a season-ending injury earlier this week, and they will be without full-back Max Jowitt for up to three months. Kelepi Tanginoa is currently sidelined with a minor hamstring injury.
And now utility back Lee Gaskell is set for weeks on the sidelines with a suspected torn pectoral muscle in their defeat at Headingley.
Samisoni Langi will also be unavailable for next weekend’s match at Salford after failing a head injury assessment early in the second half.
Mark Applegarth on Wakefield defeat to Leeds
Applegarth bemoaned his side’s failure to end a scoreless streak that now stands for over four hours. They’ve got scored since the late stages of their opening round defeat to Catalans.
He said: “I thought we were right in it until the first 10 minutes of the second half but we can’t just keep on playing that way, we gave four penalties away in that period and Leeds took full advantage.
“We lost Lee and Sami and they were two pivotal moments, but we have to learn to hang in there and stay patient and start scoring some points.
“It is early in the season and there are some positives I can take out of the game. I can’t fault anyone for effort but we need to get some more smarts and composure about us. And we can’t keep saying that, because we’ve got to start learning the lessons quickly.”
Wakefield will look to get their first win on the board when they travel to the AJ Bell Stadium to face Salford next Sunday, 3pm kick-off.
