Wakefield talisman Johnstone out for season

Tom Johnstone faces eight months on the sidelines, ruling him out of the rest of the Super League season and the World Cup.

Wakefield Trinity winger Tom Johnstone is out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 21-year-old suffered the injury in last Sunday's 30-10 Super League win over Catalans Dragons.

Johnstone now faces eight months on the sidelines, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign and ending his hopes of featuring for England at the World Cup this year.

Having scored 20 tries in 25 games last term as Wakefield finished in the top eight and reached the Challenge Cup semi-finals, Johnstone already had seven to his name this season.

He is to undergo surgery after the knee has recovered from the initial damage.

"I'm trying to be positive about it," Johnstone told the club's website.

"The amount of pain I was in I didn't think it was good, but I didn't think it was anywhere near as serious as it is."
