Wales player ratings: Danny Ward and Joe Rodon impress despite defeat to Italy

Wales lost 1-0 to Italy in their Euro 2020 game in Rome but advance to the knockouts as Group A runners-up, but how did each player perform?

Danny Ward
Barely played for Leicester this season but continues to enhance his reputation with Wales. Very busy here, producing a number of fine saves and was good with his distribution. 7/10

Chris Gunter
Appeared to struggle early on but recovered to show his vast experience, a calm head in the face of a bombardment. Came close in the first-half with his first ever goal for Wales. 6/10

Joe Rodon
Set the tone with a brilliant headed clearance early on and defended admirably for much of the match. A towering performance from the Tottenham defender, who is growing in stature. 8/10

Ethan Ampadu
Operated in the middle of defence and not afraid to step into midfield, he was impressive before his second-half dismissal. Accidental, but a dangerous challenge. 5/10

Connor Roberts
Typically energetic display, his work-rate epitomises Wales at Euro 2020. Chances of helping out going forward as a wing-back were limited. 5/10

Joe Morrell
Was given the task of man-marking Verratti and endured a difficult afternoon. Careless with his passing and caught out by Pessina’s movement for the only goal. 5/10

Joe Allen
The heartbeat of Wales’s team, always available and wanting possession but often outnumbered by Italy’s midfield. Booked in the second-half. 5/10

Neco Williams
A little shaky at times and given a tough examination on the left by Chiesa. Not an experience the 20-year-old will forget. 4/10

Aaron Ramsey
A false nine in a front-three, Ramsey could not make any impact and looked uncomfortable in the role. Moved further back after the introduction of Moore. 5/10

Gareth Bale
Unable to influence the first-half, with Wales defending so deep, and will be haunted by the glorious chance he missed 15 minutes from the end. His threat is limited by the sheer lack of attacking options. 5/10

Daniel James
Moved from left to right in attack due to Italy’s dominance but rarely given the chance to use his pace and exploit any space. Delivery from set-pieces also disappointing. 5/10
