Wales have been forced into a change to their squad for their tour to South Africa in July with Saracens prop Sam Wainwright added to the group as a replacement for the injured Leon Brown.

According to a Welsh Rugby Union press statement, Brown has not recovered from a nerve issue which he sustained during a club match for the Dragons.

Uncapped at Test level, Wainwright, who was born in North Wales, will join Wales coach Wayne Pivac’s squad at the completion of the current Premiership campaign.

Saracens will take on defending Premiership champions Harlequins in their semi-final at the StoneX Stadium on Saturday. If Sarries beat Quins they will face the winner of the other playoff between Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints at Twickenham on June 18.

Inexperienced

Wainwright, who is 24, has represented Wales at U20 level and made 18 appearances for Saracens since he joined them in 2019.

Wales finished their 2022 Six Nations campaign on a low note when they suffered a shock 22-21 defeat to Italy in Cardiff and they face a daunting task against the 2019 World Cup-winning Springboks in a three-Test series.

They kick off the series in Pretoria on July 2 before heading to Bloemfontein and Cape Town for the second and third Tests on July 9 and 16 respectively.
