Matt Taylor has made the decision that he will be stepping away from his role as defence coach of the Wallabies.

The call comes after a record 48-17 loss to Michael Cheika’s Argentina side in San Juan, which has seen the Wallabies slump to seventh in the world rankings.

Los Pumas dominated the Wallabies across most facets of the game and scored a whopping seven tries on their way to victory, including a 19-point haul from Emiliano Boffelli.

Two years in the team

Taylor joined Dave Rennie’s coaching team with the Wallabies in 2020 and has more than 10 years of coaching experience at Test level between stints as assistant coaches for Scotland and Australia.

The split was mutual between the 49-year-old and Rennie’s coaching team as Taylor felt he needed to leave for personal reasons.

Rennie praised Taylor for his contribution to the team in the two-year stint with the national side that has seen highs and lows, including a series win against France and their most recent defeat to Argentina.

“Matt is a great man with a strong work ethic, who is well respected within the Wallabies environment and we will miss him,” Rennie told the Wallabies’ official website.

Taylor said he needed to spend more time with family and that he would return to coaching when the “time was right”.

“While this was an extremely difficult decision, I know it’s the right one for me and my family at this point in time,” Taylor added.

“I’m looking forward to spending more time with them and look forward to getting back into coaching when the time is right.”

Next challenge

Rennie’s Wallabies will welcome the Springboks next weekend for the first of two Tests in Australia. The head coach will be hoping for some reinforcements in his coaching structure as he looks to right the ship.

Given Rennie’s win rate of around 40 per cent, their injuries and changes in the coaching staff, the tactician will be desperate to put a strong series of performances against South Africa.
