Everton needs a new manager after the sacking of Ronald Koeman on Monday. It has started the usual debates of who should come in to replace him. A look at the odds on any betting website can make for grim reading with some of the candidates mentioned, but one of those candidates is David Unsworth.

In the 90’s when and early 00’s it was a miracle that Everton didn’t get relegated. A large part of why we didn’t was a set of players who performed to their absolute limit and gave everything they could to the club, Unsworth was one of those players.

At that time, it would have been hard to guess who could have become the future manager of the club out of those teams; there would have been a wide range of guesses. Through his work as a coach and the youth teams, Unsworth has now become the one player from our history the fans would most like to see in charge.

His work with the Under 23 side has been exceptional. He has developed players while winning matches with an attractive style of football. He knows the club inside out and knows what the fans expect.

There is a line of thinking that he needs to go away and learn his trade away from the club. That may be a fair point, but managing a League 1 side would surely be as much use as managing the Under 23’s, the Premier League is a whole new ball game.

The other options

Carlo Ancelotti is the 5th favourite, and that would be the dream given his reputation and honours list. It is though, very unlikely, despite the Italian not having many other options at the moment.

That leave the likes of Sean Dyche, David Moyes and Sam Allardyce mentioned. I’d much rather see Unsworth given a chance than any of those names. Everton aren’t going to get in the top four and need much better player recruitment if we are to challenge towards the top. Unsworth seems like the ideal candidate to see the club through to the next chapter.

It would be a risk, granted, but due to his work at the club already I feel it’s a risk worth taking. A lot of fans thought we were onto a sure thing with Koeman, football has a habit of making people look like fools.

If there was anyone to galvanize and gel a bunch of individuals, surely it’s a man who has Everton running through his blood. It may be a romantic choice, but it’s also based in the logic of his time at the club. If the club decide to opt for a British coach, I hope it’s Unsworth who gets the call. He deserves his chance.
