Former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald recalls a conversation he had in 2015 with Virat Kohli, who was taking the Test captaincy of the Indian team from MS Dhoni. Kohli was made in charge of the side which was 7th ranked then, and hurled them to the top spot in ICC rankings in a couple of years time.

India have been ruling Test cricket for the past few years; they have been indomitable at home in particular. Although the Asian giants lost to New Zealand in the WTC final, India is arguably the strongest all-condition team in the world.

The credit goes to their charismatic skipper who has led the side passionately and infused energy in his players.

Allan Donald revealed Kohli’s ambitions when new into the Test captaincy job. He marvels over the fact the Delhi-born has done exactly what he said, and is on the way to make India the most powerful Test team in the world.

On the YouTube channel ‘Cricket Life Stories’, Allan Donald said, “I remember Virat’s words in 2015 when he said to me India will become world’s No.1 Test team and he wasn’t wrong. He knew where he was going. He said: ‘I want this to be the fittest team, I want us to be the greatest team on the planet, knowing that we can play away from home, knowing we can beat anyone and that’s going to take a very good bowling attack to do so.'”

Under Kohli, India defeated Australia in Australia for the first time. They have made a resounding start to the ongoing series in England with a thumping win at Lord’s and are favourites to claim the series.

Allan Donald, one of the fearsome pacers of his time, is impressed with the rise of Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian spearhead has taken 95 wickets in 22 Tests so far at 22.62, and is on his way to becoming arguably India’s greatest fast bowler.

“Young Bumrah for me, well, this kid has come a long way. You know, he’s just been a sensation in all formats of the game,” the former Protea speedster said.

The third Test will commence on August 25 at Headingley, Leeds. England have recalled Dawid Malan in the hope to improve their batting while dropping Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley.
