Warren Joyce makes key Nottingham Forest 'experience' point after shootout defeat to Wigan Athletic
Nottingham Forest Under-21s boss Warren Joyce hopes his players can learn from the experience after they were knocked out of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy by Wigan Athletic.
In a winner-takes-all tie as the group stage of the competition came to a close, it was a game of few chances at the Brick Community Stadium. It finished 0-0 after 90 minutes so a penalty shootout was required to determine who would progress in the competition.
Jack Nadin, James Sinclair and Kyle McAdam all had their spot-kicks saved. It meant the Latics triumphed 3-0 to secure their place in the knockout stages of the trophy.
“We are trying to develop players. These games are all about educating players to hopefully play for our first-team or in league football,” Joyce said.
“We were playing against a good team who can handle the ball. I thought tactically we were excellent throughout the game and dealt with one-v-one situations really well. We were really aggressive, on the front foot and pressing.
“We were limited in possession at times but we still created one or two decent opportunities and could have nicked a goal. Likewise, I don’t think they had that many good opportunities.
“Penalties are a lottery then in any situation. It is disappointing for the players because they have come through situations where they have won penalty shootouts but as a learning experience and giving an account of themselves, it is good. “
