Daryl Powell hasn’t completely ruled out Gareth Widdop’s season, but the Warrington boss admits it’s ‘unlikely’ the half-back will play again this season.

The England international suffered a dislocated shoulder in the act of scoring in their 36-10 win over Catalans Dragons at St James’ Park.

He left the field after crossing for the opening try just two minutes into the clash at Magic Weekend.

Providing an update, Powell said: “This is the fourth time he’s done it [dislocated his shoulder]. It doesn’t need an operation.

“The prognosis is six weeks I think. You’re getting towards the back-end of the season there.

“I’m not sure if he would be available again this season. For him as a bloke and as a player, it’s pretty good news I think. It could have been much worse. I think he’s going to be alright which is great news for him.

“I think there’s a slight chance. Getting him right is the most important thing.

“There might be a scenario where he could play at the end if we’re in the play-offs and if we get to the semi-finals. But then there’s a team that’s brought you to a semi-final, so you’ve got to make those decisions.

“I haven’t got a crystal ball, but I think it would still be unlikely that he’ll play.”

Powell confirmed there won’t be too many changes to his side that picked up the win in Newcastle for their upcoming clash at Castleford Tigers. Forwards Mike Cooper and Kyle Amor miss out once again, while youngster Tom Whitehead has been included in the 21-man squad.

Powell added: “Mike Cooper is fine. I just decided to give a young player an opportunity in the squad.

“Kyle needs another week.”
