Huddersfield have signed Toby King from Warrington on loan for the rest of the season, with Jake Wardle going the other way.

Ireland international King was left out of Daryl Powell’s Warrington squad that beat Hull 4-0 in Super League on Friday night.

When asked why King was dropped, Powell said: “I’m just trying to get the best team out there. You know, obviously, I left Toby (King) out. I feel like he’s been below his best for a few weeks now. And I felt like that needed to happen to change that left edge. I felt like the left edge was pretty stiff.

“I just felt tonight that he (Peter Mata’utia) would give us that sense of organisation that perhaps we haven’t had enough.”

Meanwhile, Jake Wardle, who made his England debut last weekend, has been in and out of Ian Watson’s Huddersfield team so far in 2022.

King and Wardle have swapped clubs on a loan deal for the remainder of the 2022 campaign as they target World Cup places.

Powell said: “The Toby king and Jake Wardle swap deal was one that came up pretty quickly.

“We are looking to build a really exciting outside back division, with youth and pace as a central point of that. Jake fits that bill perfectly, alongside the quality outside backs coming through at the club already.”

Wardle could make his Warrington debut next Sunday when they welcome Salford to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The 23-year-old has scored 22 tries in 64 appearances for the Giants. He scored in England’s win over the Combined Nations All Stars last weekend.

King has come through the system at Warrington, scoring 52 tries in 138 games for the Wolves. He won the Challenge Cup with Warrington in 2019; and was named in the Super League Dream Team the following season.

Wardle is under contract with Huddersfield until at least the end of next season.

King only signed a long-term deal with Warrington last May, committing his future to the Wolves until at least the end of 2025.
