Warwickshire moved eight points clear of Nottinghamshire at the top of the LV= County Championship Division One table after last-day rain sentenced their their duel with Middlesex at Uxbridge to a draw.

The match was intriguingly poised with all three results possible going into the final day with Middlesex set to resume on 104 for three, 182 ahead overall. But the teams were frustrated by a string of torrential downpours which washed out the morning session.

The home side extended their second innings to 181 for six before declaring at tea. That left Warwickshire requiring an implausible 260 from 40 overs and they cantered to 78 for one from 27 before shaking hands.

Somerset remain on the fringes of the title race after a rain-affected draw of their own, against Lancashire in Liverpool.

Only 32 overs were possible on the final day at Aigburth, with the visitors advancing from 22 for one to 93 for three before their pursuit of 279 was halted by the elements.

Both teams took six points, leaving fourth-placed Somerset 20 points off the summit and reigning champions Lancashire just nine clear of the relegation zone.
