Wizards star Bradley Beal reenters COVID-19 health and safety protocols

Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal reentered the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols on Tuesday afternoon, the team announced.

Beal, who was out for 11 days last month in protocols but is now vaccinated, will miss their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night. It’s unclear how long he will be gone.

Beal was one of the longest coronavirus vaccine holdouts in the league. He missed the Tokyo Olympics last summer after landing in coronavirus protocols, and said that he didn’t get vaccinated for “personal reasons." He drew heavy backlash, but Beal stuck with his reasoning initially. He did, though, completely reject the support of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz after the Texas Republican said he was standing with Beal and other unvaccinated players.

Beal finally received his vaccine last month, and said that he did so because of his family.

Beal has averaged 24 points and 6.4 assists per game this season, his 10th with the Wizards. The 28-year-old put up 20 points and seven assists in their 102-100 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the United States is averaging more than 738,000 new cases of the coronavirus each day, according to The New York Times — which is a 204% increase over the past two weeks. There were more than 1.4 million new cases on Monday alone.
