New Zealand got their Rugby World Cup campaign off to the perfect start after they scored a try in the opening two minutes.

Mark Telea touched down after one minute and 32 seconds, which broke the record for the quickest-ever try in an opening World Cup match.

It was superbly worked as off the top of a lineout from halfway, they shifted the ball into midfield, and good hands set Rieko Ioane free down the middle.

The centre was eventually brought down, but not before he had taken play deep into the opposition’s 22.

Under pressure, France conceded a penalty and, instead of going for the three-pointer, the visitors went quickly.

The playmaking axis of Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett combined well, and the latter produced an inch-perfect crossfield kick, which was collected and finished by Telea.

Telea’s score 92 seconds into the match beat Russia’s Kirill Golosnitski record (4.45 minutes) against Japan in the opening game of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

After a fearsome Kapa o Pango, it was perhaps unsurprising that New Zealand started with such ferocity as they laid down the challenge to Les Bleus.

France were unperturbed, however, and edged their way into the contest via Thomas Ramos’ penalty before the full-back added another off the tee to take the hosts in front.

It was proving to be an evenly matched opening contest, but New Zealand were having more pressure inside the opposition 22.

They were duly rewarded for their patience when Mo’unga took the All Blacks back in front off the tee.

Ian Foster’s men were conceding a few too many scrum penalties, though, and when Ethan de Groot infringed on halfway, Ramos was once again on target for a 9-8 advantage.
