Watch as Celtic star Alistair Johnston HEADBUTTED for Canada but opponent amazingly escapes punishment

Alistair Johnston was HEADBUTTED during Canada's clash with Peru in the Copa America - and amazingly his opponent escaped punishment.

The clash came after the Celtic right-back and Marcos López both chased after an overrun ball in behind the Canadian defence. With the ball looking set to run out the pitch, Johnston moved his body across just to block off the Feyenoord left-back just in case.

It did indeed run out for a Canada goal kick but there was a reaction from Lopez. He squared up to the Hoops star as they went head to head, and there was a definite movement of his head into Johnston's, who went down clutching his face as a result.

The referee blew his whistle to try and calm things down but didn't look to take further action. And, surprisingly, after a VAR review it wasn't seen fit to ask him to check it out for further action.

Johnston and his teammates went on to win 1-0 through Jonathan David while the Peruvians did end up having a man sent off in Miguel Araujo, this time VAR stepping in after a review. Motherwell's Theo Bair, linked with a move away this summer, remained an unused sub.

The win puts Canada in with a strong chance of qualification for the knockouts, sitting second in their group behind Argentina and ahead of Chile and Peru.
