Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the two clubs that are actively pursuing Cristiano Ronaldo’s signature.
Ronaldo is a free agent following the termination of his contract at Manchester United earlier this month.
The writing was on the wall for the 37-year-old’s Old Trafford future when he gave an explosive interview with Piers Morgan on the eve of the World Cup, in which he laid bare all his criticisms and frustrations about United and how the club is run.
The Portugal international was the highest-paid player in the Premier League with a reported salary of £500,000 a week. The exact details are yet to emerge of how the club and the player’s representative mutually agreed to terminate the contract, but he’s now free to sign lucrative terms elsewhere.
It’s already been widely reported that Saudi club Al Nassr have offered Ronaldo an astonishing offer. Romano describes the package from Al Nassr to be the “biggest proposal in the history of football”, writing in The Guardian that it’s worth €200million (£173million) per season, running until 2025.
It’s a truly mindblowing amount of money that surely dwarfs any figure that a European club would be able to offer him. It remains to be seen whether he’s ready to call time on his career in Europe, while it’s previously been suggested that he’s privately concerned about the prospect of long-time rival Lionel Messi breaking his goalscoring record in the Champions League.
Ronaldo is said to be fully focused on Portugal’s World Cup and will consider his club options once it’s over. They’re through into the knockout stages after winning their first two group stage matches, and it remains the only major trophy that the veteran goalscorer is yet to get his hands on.
However, when the time comes, he will have different options to consider. Romano has revealed that another Saudi club are in for his signature; Al Hilal are also actively chasing Ronaldo. However, a deal wouldn’t be quite as simple.
“This club is Al Hilal. It’s true that Cristiano Ronaldo was approached by people close to Al Hilal,” Romano said in his latest YouTube update.
“People at the club are prepared to make another important and crazy proposal.
“There is one interesting point though. I am told Al Hilal are not able to sign players in January.
“They will only be able to sign players in the summer. That’s why at the moment it is complicated.”
