Jonny Bairstow took a brilliant catch in the slips to send back a fidgety-looking KL Rahul on the third day of the third Test at Headingley. The ball was traveling at the rate of knots when Bairstow stuck his left hand out to grab the ball.
Having taken the last two wickets cheaply, India needed to get a good start from their openers. Rahul alongside Rohit Sharma played out the new ball well putting aside the fact that there were a few plays and misses. The duo took India close to Lunch unscathed before Craig Overton sent Rahul packing.
Rahul has been good at leaving balls outside off the entire series. However, he was made to hang his bat out to an Overton delivery, courtesy of the angle the pacer created. The ball caught the edge of the bat and flew towards the slip cordon.
Bairstow, standing at second slip, threw his left hand at it and held on to the ball. Although it may have looked like it was Joe Root’s catch, the skipper wasn’t complaining as a 19-over opening vigil came to an end at the stroke of Lunch.

Indian hopes hinged on Rohit Sharma as the visitors reach Lunch at 34/1
A poor first day’s play continues to haunt the Indian side as they have a mountain to climb if they are to have a chance of even saving the Headingley Test. England managed to add only nine runs to their overnight score as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami cleaned up the last two wickets.
Rahul and Rohit started off decently, albeit the former looked in discomfort trying to keep the nagging English bowlers at bay. However, Rohit continued to excel in the series, having a great sense of where his off-stump lies and not prodding at deliveries outside off.
He also played his strokes, including a ramp off Ollie Robinson all the way over third man for a six. Most of the runs so far have come from his bat, and India will hope he goes on to get a big one. The under-fire middle-order will also have to step up after the lunch break if India has to avoid an embarrassing innings defeat.
