A GROUP of Middlesbrough fans had to brave Storm Darragh on a brutal trek down the side of a motorway and ended up watching Boro's game against Burnley in a service station after an away day to forget.

The supporters were heading for Turf Moor on Friday night for Boro's Championship clash against their promotion rivals but came to a halt after the coach they were travelling on was involved in a minor crash on the M1.

Thankfully nobody was hurt but with the coach unable to continue the journey because of the damage, the group of Teessiders were forced to spend 40 minutes waiting on board.

With the motorway briefly closed because of the incident, the fans then braved the shocking weather conditions and walked 15 minutes to Skelton Lake Services near Leeds.

There, the manager of the services at least eased the pain of the Boro fans by agreeing to put the game on the big screen. And in a brilliant video, shared with the Northern Echo by Boro supporter Chris Garbutt, the fans can be seen celebrating in the service station when Anfernee Dijksteel put Michael Carrick's side ahead.

Unfortunately, the supporters couldn't watch the full game, with replacement coaches arriving at around 9pm. By that stage it was obviously far too late to get to Turf Moor, so the supporters headed back for Teesside.

"We'd only been on the road for 45 minutes or so and everyone was buzzing for the game, then the next thing there was just this bang and we came to a stop," says Boro fan Chris.

"The highway motorway team came and they tried to restart the bus but we couldn't get going. So we had to sit on the bus while they closed the M1. Then the recovery came to move the bus and allowed us to walk along the motorway to the service station."

Chris added: "We had a 15, 20 minute walk to Skelton Lake and the manager agreed to put the game on the big screen, so we all congregated in the middle watching the game. When we scored, everyone was going mad singing songs.

"But at half-time the coaches turned up to take us back to Boro.

"I did check my Uber app and it was going to be £70 to get us to Turf Moor but because they were closing the M1 we weren't able to get off the bus. And by the time we did it was an hour before kick-off. Then we'd have obviously had to get back from Burnley without the bus.

"I was gutted to miss the match but once we got our head around the fact we weren't going to make it, we made the best of a bad situation. It wasn't great at the time walking along the M1 in a storm and missing the match but we'll look back and laugh."
