WATCH: Scotland score sensational length-of-the-pitch try after contentious decision
Scotland rounded off their 26-14 victory over Italy with a stunning length-of-the-pitch try, finished by Blair Kinghorn.
The score saw fly-half Kinghorn completing his hat-trick after two earlier tries at Murrayfield, his second career treble against the Azzurri.
What a try!
From a scrum just five metres from their line, Kinghorn spread the ball wide to Duhan van der Merwe.
The speedster shifted gears, gliding past Pierre Bruno and Marco Zanon.
Van der Merwe then drew Tommy Allan in before passing to Kinghorn, who still had half the pitch in front of him.
Kinghorn showed a clean pair of heels, though, as he sped away from Allan and Paolo Garbisi to secure the bonus point and the win for the Scots.
While there are no complaints over the try, Scotland got possession from a controversial decision against Michele Lamaro that led to the scrum.
After multiple phases inside the Scottish 22, Italy had the hosts on the ropes and looked to land the final blow and secure a come-from-behind victory.
However, as Lamaro picked and drove towards the line, Jack Dempsey dislodged the ball from his hands.
Prior to the incident, Scotland had been penalised for offside. However, the decision to award the scrum to the hosts came from the TMO, who alerted Angus Gardner to the knock-on.
Many onlookers on Twitter felt that Italy were hard done by as they felt Dempsey was offside.
‘If I was an Italian rugby fan I’d be v aggrieved with the ref there. Two Scots clearly offside at that final ruck… penalty try should have been the call, rather than knock on…’ argued Pete Wilson.
‘HOW IS THAT NOT OFFSIDE?! Italy absolutely robbed’ added @CardiffRugbyWeb.
‘Oh that’s sickening for Italy. The knock on was from the tackler, and the Scots were offside anyway. Never should’ve been a Scottish scrum in the first place.’ another added.
The defeat means that Italy collect the Wooden Spoon for 2023 after losing all five of their matches in the tournament.
