Sam Powell could be in big trouble following his tackle on St Helens winger Jon Bennison.

The Wigan hooker was sent for 10 minutes in the second half for a crusher tackle on the St Helens youngster.

Powell, 29, landed on Bennison’s neck at the Totally Wicked Stadium in the Good Friday derby. The tackle sparked a coming together between the two sides.

He was eventually sent from the field by referee Liam Moore.

St Helens claimed blagging rights in the derby, claiming a 22-4 victory over their rivals. A sell out crowd of 17,980 saw tries from Tommy Makinson, Jonny Lomax, Joe Batchelor and Mark Percival. Full-back Jai Field scored Wigan’s only try of the afternoon in the first half.

Sam Powell could be in huge trouble

The Match Review Panel will meet on Saturday, April 16, to consider any incidents arising from Rivals Round fixtures in Super League. They will meet again on Tuesday, April 19, to consider incidents from Round 9.

Any charges incurred will not come into effect until Round 10, with no opportunity for players to appeal any charges at the Operational Rules Tribunal until Wednesday, April 20.

The deadline for submission of squads for the Round 9 Super League fixtures on Easter Monday will now be 9:00am on Easter Sunday.

Matt Peet expecting ban

Following the game, Wigan head coach Matt Peet was asked if he thinks Powell will receive a ban. He replied: “I expect we will. I’ve seen it back and it’s not good.

“Sam is disappointed. His technique needs to be better. It was a poor tackle on a young player in Jon Bennison, I hope he’s okay. Sam’s disappointed, it’s not in his nature but it was a bad one.

“Put it down to fatigue and bad timing. You don’t like to see any player hurt and I hope Jon Bennison is okay.”
