Beauden Barrett has endured a tough start to the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, and it got worse on Saturday as he wasted a chance to score a try against the Chiefs.
The All Blacks playmaker made an uncharacteristic error in the loss to the Chiefs as his foot glanced the dead ball line before he could score.
Barrett’s blunder
The incident occurred in the 13th minute after the Blues turned down a shot at goal and went to a lineout deep inside the Chiefs‘ 22.
After setting the maul, the Blues‘ pack powered forward and went just short of the line.
Scrum-half Finlay Christie dug the ball out and spun it to Barrett, who sliced through the defence and went cruised over the try-line.
The fly-half tried to work a better angle for the ensuing conversion. However, he was ankle tapped by Chiefs lock Tupou Vaa’i.
The try was ruled out, and luckily the Blues had an advantage and did not lose possession of the ball.
“He had ample opportunity to ground that try,” Justin Marshall said on commentary, adding that it was a very ‘uncharacteristic’ error from the playmaker.
Barrett did make up for the error as he worked the space out wide to set Caleb Clarke over, but that was some five minutes later.
It was a tough night at the office for the experienced All Black, who hit his conversion attempt low and missed his second for Clarke’s try too.
Meanwhile, his opposite number, Damian McKenzie, continued his fine form for the Chiefs.
He converted his four shots at goal, two conversions and two penalties.
The 27-year-old also assisted one of Emoni Narawa’s two tries as the Chiefs continued their unbeaten start to the season, claiming a 20-13 victory.
The Blues head to Australia next, where they will face the Melbourne Rebels, while the Chiefs are away to the Hurricanes.
