Indian skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed early on by England pacer James Anderson on Day 1 of the third Test at Headingley, Leeds. Kohli got sucked into a drive but only managed to get an edge as his lean patch in international cricket continues.

After electing to bat first on a cloudy morning at Headingley, India was off to a terrible start. A pumped-up James Anderson got the ball to move right from the get-go, inducing poor shots from KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara. In walked Kohli, who needed to build a partnership with Rohit Sharma.

However, it wasn’t to be. Anderson was bowling in full rhythm, showing no scars from the previous Test’s events. Having bowled a few back of length deliveries, Anderson dished one full and right in the slot. Unable to inhibit his natural instinct to go for the drive, Kohli went at with hard hands and away from the body.

A thick edge was produced which was gobbled up by the ‘keeper, Jos Buttler, who pocketed his third catch of the match. The England team, Anderson in particular, went into delirium and enjoyed every bit of the moment.

India in deep trouble at 21/3 following Virat Kohli’s dismissal

Prior to the start of the match, team India was on a high following the memorable victory at Lord’s. It looked like they were yet to come down from that high, which resulted in complacency and over-confidence at Headingley.

Rahul, who has had a terrific series so far, went chasing at a delivery well wide outside off from James Anderson just four deliveries into his innings. It brought about his downfall, and the batsman who followed, Pujara, also got reeled in by an away-going ball.

While Rohit fought it out at the other end, Kohli looked to get into a rhythm. However, Anderson prevailed over his arch-nemesis this time and picked up his third wicket of the morning. India was struggling at 21/3, with Ajinkya Rahane joining his Mumbai teammate at the other end.
