Wawrinka and Tsonga in heated exchange during set break

Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have been involved in a heated exchange during the opening set break of their quarter-final clash.

The two top seeds argued passionately in French after Wawrinka won the opening set.

Channel Seven commentator Jim Courier was able to piece together some of their argument, saying it was over eye contact.

"Really hard to hear exactly what the irritation was... but it seemed to be a conflict about them looking at each other," Courier said.

Twitter users quickly verified that the argument was indeed over eye contact.

French site Tennis Legend reported the argument to have gone as follows:

JWT: Why are you looking at me like that?

Stan: Look at what? It is you who look at me and speaking to me. What are you looking for?

JWT: You do not understand.

Stan: Did I look at you once?

JWT: Of course.

Stan: Did I look at you once?

JWT: Yeah!

Stan: When?

JWT: There, at length.

Stan: You're looking at me. It's a tennis game eh, relax a bit.

Courier identified that Tsonga was the one who started the confrontation.

"Whatever the irritation is it was coming from Jo (Tsonga) - Jo was the one who was aggravated and expressed displeasure," Courier said.

"Stan was trying to figure out when he did it, he did say 'quand' which means 'when' - 'when did I do it'.

"So whatever it is - Stan didn't think he did anything.

"But there's a little tension in this match, and it really needed it."

The commentators agreed that the exchange was good for the match, as it added some much-needed passion and intensity to the encounter.

Wawrinka won the clash in straight sets to advance to the semi-final of a major for the eighth time.
