Wayne Rooney has agreed his next managerial role after leaving Derby County, according to a report.

Rooney quit as Derby boss on June 25 following an eventful spell at Pride Park. The former striker was given the job in January last year, following a few months as caretaker manager.

He did brilliantly to keep morale up at the club despite the backdrop of their financial and ownership difficulties.

Derby received a 21-point deduction last season due to them entering administration. They were also hit with a transfer embargo, affecting their ability to bring in new players or offer contracts.

Despite these massive issues, Rooney helped Derby pick up 14 wins and 13 draws during their league campaign.

They would have finished around 17th place if it weren’t for the points deduction. But ultimately it proved to be a damaging fine as the Rams were relegated to League One.

Rooney has been looking for his next manager job in recent weeks and has reportedly found his next destination.

According to The Athletic, the Englishman has agreed terms with MLS outfit D.C United.

He has been in talks with club officials for ‘weeks’ and is now poised to become their new first-team coach.

However, Rooney is seemingly going from one club in trouble to another.

The Athletic state D.C United are in ‘disarray’. Their most recent outing ended in a 7-0 loss to Philadelphia Union – the worst defeat in their history.

Rooney is set to become their third manager this year. D.C United let Hernan Losada go in April and now interim boss Chad Ashton is set to follow him out of the door.

It is surprising to see Rooney go from one troublesome club to another. Perhaps he fancies a challenge and wants to take D.C United back to their former glory.

The former Manchester United star will have learnt a lot from his time at Derby and now knows how to deal with sides in difficulty.

Plus, he has experience with D.C United, having played for them between July 2018 and January 2020.
