Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has claimed that season 2 of the hit Netflix show won't focus on a romantic storyline.

During an 'in-conversation' interview with The Great's Elle Fanning via Variety, Ortega confirmed that audiences won't see a love interest for her character in the next series. Instead, the show will tap into another genre that was pivotal in season one.

"We're ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great," she said. "We've decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.

"Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don't want to take yourself too seriously."

In the first season, Wednesday found herself in a love triangle with sheriff's son Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and fellow Nevermore Academy pupil Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White).

In the Wednesday season one ending, we saw Galpin uncovered and caught as the monster, who was taken away by authorities, essentially terminating any relationship with Wednesday.

Meanwhile, things with Thorpe didn't progress romantically in the show's finale, despite the candle he holds for Wednesday.

The season finale saw him giving Wednesday a phone, suggesting that he wants to say in touch with her during the summer break. This hinted at more of a platonic connection than a romantic one.

Ortega previously revealed that she didn't agree with Wednesday's romantic storyline on the show. She told Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast that it was one of many script changes she queried when signing on to play the lead character.

"I don't think I've ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on Wednesday,'" she said. "Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense."

Ortega has since been confirmed as an executive producer for Wednesday season two. Having been involved with creative decisions around her character in season one, she felt it was a "natural progression".

"I’m just so curious. I want to see the outfits, new characters that are coming in, scripts, and they were gracious enough to let me put the producer hat on," Ortega said.

A second season of Wednesday was officially confirmed by Netflix in January this year.

Wednesday season one is available to stream on Netflix now.
