Wenger: Van Persie's departure is a complete mystery
Arsenal boss stunned by Manchester United's decision to sell Holland striker
Arsene Wenger has revealed he was stunned by Manchester United's decision to sell Robin van Persie.
The former Arsenal striker has joined Fenerbahce in Turkey for just £4m and Wenger feels he will be a difficult act to follow.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Asia Trophy Final against Everton in Singapore, Wenger insisted the man he sold for £22m three years ago is far from past his best.
He said: “It’s a big surprise that Robin Van Persie goes to Turkey this summer. I don’t know why he leaves but he is a big loss for English football and the Premier League.
“He’s an exceptional football player, one of the best I’ve managed, with an exceptional technique.”
Wenger also revealed he will be sending striker Yaya Sanogo on loan to Ajax for the season where he will with former Arsenal legends Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech will make his Gunners debut against Everton following his £10m switch from Chelsea.
