Jack Grealish has been criticised by Arsene Wenger in the wake of Manchester City’s dramatic defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side crashed out of the competition after two Rodrygo goals in two minutes at the end of normal time stunned the away side, before Karim Benzema secured victory from the penalty spot in extra time.

Grealish was close to putting the game to bed before the Madrid comeback having made an immediate impact from the bench, but the £100m summer signing was at fault for Rodrygo’s second of the night according to Wenger.

The former Arsenal boss told beIN SPORT: “When you look at 1-1, when Grealish is against Carvajal, he is passed easily, too easily. He must absolutely fight to stop that cross!

“You do not want the ball in the box, anything can happen when everybody goes forward.

“That is where City did not secure the game, defending on the sides. Because they conceded, even when you look when Benzema gave the ball back, they didn’t really attack the ball the defenders, they made big mistakes.”

But Wenger also hailed Carlo Ancelotti’s side for “always finding a solution” having come through games against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and now Manchester City having been on the backfoot for the majority of those ties.

He added: “When you’re a manager and you lose a game, you go home and always think, ‘what have I done wrong?’. The second thing I would say is that what is surprising for me is that this team from Madrid, when they need an answer to a problem, they always find a solution.

“Let’s not forget they scored six goals against City, they scored six against Chelsea. It is not always the case that City concede six goals in two games. They have something special.”

Madrid will take on Liverpool in the Champions League final on May 28 in a repeat of the 2018 showpiece, best remembered for Gareth Bale’s stunning overhead kick and Loris Karius’ nightmare in goal for the Reds.
