"We were the better team and we should have been on the coach with three points" - Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn after defeat at MK Dons
A highly frustrating afternoon in the end?
Yes, massively frustrating. The fact they didn’t have to do anything for their goals and it was all helped by us is the frustrating thing because we’ve given away three very, very poor goals. Alex Gilbey on the first one, is five or seven yards behind Ibrahim (Bakare) and he gets five yards ahead of him. That’s not defending properly, it’s cheap, it’s poor, as were all the goals.
You were 2-0 up inside 13 minutes through Luke Young and George Miller
I thought we were really good today and we played really well. We have given them the three points. They have a really good squad, with good players and they don’t need any help. We have gone and helped them, but we played well. We just defended really poorly for the three goals and that’s the frustrating thing.
George Miller deserved a goal for his hard work in recent games, didn’t he?
He deserves it for his hard work, but I couldn’t really care if George scored today. We have lost the game. I don’t care who scores. But George’s workrate and sacrifice for the team has been exceptional and he did deserve his goal, but I wish it was a win.
How did you see their equaliser?
I saw three players all sucked towards one ball and one man, allowing someone to go through 1 v 1 because there was no communication. You wouldn’t see it on the school yard. The amount of times we could have dealt with certain things a lot better just by opening our mouths, but unfortunately that seems to be going out of the game.
You have conceded three goals, yet Joe Day hasn’t had many saves to make
I am frustrated, but there were a lot of positives. I am not one to dress things up, or sugar coat things, or hide things. If we were poor, I’d say we were poor. I thought we were really good, it’s just the goals were very poor and we have to cut them out.
It looked like you had started to cut them out in the recent run, compared to earlier in the season
It’s not ideal. Sam (Stubbs) was a big miss, but unfortunately he had a swelling on his knee, so he hasn’t travelled. He does talk and organise. I thought Benno (Scot Bennett) and Tom Bradbury were good, in terms of how they dealt with them, but we started dropping deep halfway through the second half, so that helped them go a little more direct and we didn’t deal with it how we should have. It was a bit scrappy in terms of not getting clean clearances and things like that. Loads of positives though and we just have to kick on and go again next Friday.
Scoring goals isn’t a problem is it, scoring in every away league game this season?
Yes, we should have won this game. We should be getting on the bus with three points, eight unbeaten, looking forward to Tranmere. It’s frustrating, but we have to go on another unbeaten run and hopefully it starts on Friday.
Is Sam Stubbs a long one?
Not sure, but I don’t think it’s a long one. More of a precaution this weekend and hopefully he’ll be back for Friday.
More set piece success and Luke Young can really hit them can’t he?
Yes, we look at them, analyse the opposition and they always leave the edge free. I am frustrated we didn’t get any more from it. The keeper has made a save on one, we’ve messed up the first one, funnily enough. There was no need to do it. We go through things and the one into Jordan (Thomas) when he puts it around the corner, you wouldn’t do that if their man who is out is blocking your direct one to Youngy and he wasn’t so why we didn’t just do the simple pass anyway… it’s frustrating things and thinking on your feet in the moment, we have to improve on.
Can you take heart from the way you went toe to toe with a team tipped for promotion this season?
We have come here, we were the better team and we’ve lost. If we come here, play us off the park and beat us three, four or five, you hold your hands up. But that one is a tough one to take.
They have won five in the league, but no teams have made you look stupid this season have they?
No, it’s a good group and they’ll bounce back. Ibra will learn from that today and he has to take it the right way and come back stronger because this is the game, it’s unfortunate and I am frustrated, but Scott (Lindsey) has this lot going and they have a lot of players, he’s a really good manager and it’s a big club. Their budget is huge and I fully expect them to be in League One next season.
