West Ham are reportedly in advanced talks to sign experienced Aston Villa striker Danny Ings this January, in what could be a do-or-die deal for David Moyes.
The Scottish manager is under increasing pressure at the moment, with a crucial upcoming fixture against his former club and relegation rivals Everton on Saturday. If the Hammers lose that, he is almost certain to be sacked.
Ings has scored goals consistently throughout his career, so if he can come to the London Stadium and score 10 for his potential new club in the second half of the season, that could be the difference between relegation and survival.
West Ham currently find themselves in 18th place in the relegation zone after winning just four of their 19 opening league matches this season.
Most recently, they lost 1-0 to Wolves at Molineux, who are also facing a relegation battle. This defeat has piled pressure on Moyes, who ironically has been linked with a return to Everton should he lose his job.
Indeed, it truly is El Sackico on Saturday, as whoever loses between West Ham and Everton will likely be tasked with finding a new manager, as both club’s fan bases head towards boiling point.
Moyes will be hoping to have a new signing through the door by the weekend and the Hammers have already submitted a bid to sign Villa’s Danny Ings, according to the Telegraph.
They claim that the forward is now in advanced talks to sign for the East London club, after being heavily linked with a move to (yep, you guessed it) Everton in recent weeks.
The fee offered by the Hammers is not revealed in the report, but it is believed that Aston Villa’s asking price is in the region of £15m.
Since joining from Southampton in August 2021, Ings has been a solid player at Villa Park.
Overall, in 51 appearances across all competitions, the former England international has netted 14 times, also providing eight assists in the process. This season, he has been in decent form too, scoring seven goals in 21 matches for the Villans.
Ings has plenty of experience under his belt after previous stints with Bournemouth, Burnley, Liverpool and Southampton and has always scored goals fairly consistently.
Overall, in 350 appearances across his entire career, the striker has netted an impressive 120 goals, giving him an average of 0.34 goals per game.
If Ings can add a goal every three games at West Ham for the rest of the season, that could potentially make a huge difference to Moyes and his team.
The links come amid rumours that Hammers forward Michail Antonio could be leaving the club this winter after Chelsea made a surprise loan bid for him earlier this month and he has been linked with several other Premier League teams.
Summer signing Gianluca Scammaca has also failed to find his feet this season, after scoring just three times in 16 league outings, so the need for a new centre-forward is clear for West Ham.
With Villa also looking for new striker options, it looks likely that a deal for Ings could happen. The big question is, will he be signed in time for their massive six-point game against the Toffees at the weekend?
