West Ham United will need to increase their opening offer for Club Brugge attacking midfielder, Hans Vanaken, according to reports.

Vanaken has been on West Ham’s radar for much of the past couple of years. This summer, they have activated their interest again. Indeed, a few sources are suggesting they have made an offer to Club Brugge for the Belgium international.

According to 90min, West Ham have put €10million (£8.4million) on the table for Vanaken. However, Club Brugge have rejected the offer because it falls short of their asking price.

Since they have Vanaken under contract until 2025 and have already cashed in on Charles De Ketelaere this summer, the Belgian outfit are in no hurry to let him leave for a fee below their demands.

The report claims it could take as much as €20million (£16.8million) to convince Club Brugge into a sale. West Ham hope they could come up with a package starting with an initial €15million (£12.6million) investment, before including add-ons.

Promisingly for West Ham, it is claimed – by various outlets – that Vanaken is keen on the idea of joining West Ham. Approaching his 30th birthday later this month, he knows this could be his last chance to leave Belgian football for the first time and step up to a bigger league.

Furthermore, West Ham would be able to keep him involved in UEFA competition. That said, they only have Europa Conference League involvement to play for, whereas Club Brugge will be in the Champions League group stage this season.

Still, Vanaken is attracted by the prospect of leaving Club Brugge behind in favour of West Ham.

He will not be the priority target for West Ham, who want to strengthen in defence first. But with deals looking doable for Emerson Palmieri and Thilo Kehrer, the Hammers could soon turn their attention back to Vanaken.

Time could be right for West Ham to sign Hans Vanaken

After all, they were in the market to bring back Jesse Lingard this summer. Instead, the former Manchester United star chose to join Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

David Moyes may yet want to find someone else to play in that territory, especially after the exit of Nikola Vlasic to Torino. In addition, Vanaken can play slightly deeper in a central role, which is somewhere else the Irons need depth.

Vanaken is an efficient player who has scored more than 100 goals across seven years with Club Brugge. For a side like West Ham who have needed to ease the burden on Michail Antonio, his talents could be beneficial.

They are developing Jarrod Bowen into more of a goal-getter and have added Gianluca Scamacca into the mix. Perhaps Vanaken could be the next player to sign up so they can spread the goals around.

He has hit double figures in all seven of his seasons with Club Brugge. Clearly, if he can translate that to English football, he would look like someone who could justify West Ham’s long-term pursuit.
