West Ham United have reportedly launched a bid for Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Thilo Kehrer, in order to ease defensive troubles caused by injuries.

For much of last season, the Hammers were burdened by injuries in the centre of defence. Both members of the preferred partnership, Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, spent long spells on the sidelines.

Issa Diop also found himself with an injury at one point in the season. Indeed, David Moyes’ side suffered due to a lack of depth at centre-back.

The signing of Nayef Aguerd looked to have both increased the quality, and the depth at the back. However, it seems West Ham are still plagued by the same issues as last season.

Those issues were apparent in their season opener against Manchester City. Zouma played alongside Ben Johnson – a full-back – due to a host of injuries to their central defenders.

As such, it seems adding yet another centre-back to the squad to increase depth might be a good idea. Indeed, it seems that the Hammers are keen on doing just that.

Sky Sports reports they have made a bid for PSG defender Kehrer.

The German has played for the French champions for the last four seasons, and has racked up 128 appearances.

In addition, Kehrer has won a good deal of silverware with the French giants, including: three Ligue 1 titles, two French cups and the French league cup.

With that being said, he seems to be a player of solid quality.

West Ham should benefit from Kehrer signing

Should he join the club, Kehrer would be a good addition to the Hammers side. Having racked up more than 100 games for a club the size of PSG, he is clearly a useful asset at the back.

At just 25 years of age, he is likely yet to hit his prime, and West Ham could reap the rewards of that.

Kehrer has just one year left on his contract, so should not be too expensive for them.

Crucially, he would add to the depth at the back, which has been an issue for the club for some time now. As such, Kehrer would be a boost for them, and could well help in their efforts to improve on last season’s seventh-placed finish.
