West Ham Fan View: Should Hammer sell Javier Hernandez?

Javier Jernandez could be sold by West Ham after a difficult start

West Ham have not had the greatest luck when it has come to strikers in recent seasons. We did think our fortunes had changed when we signed Javier Hernandez but the signs are worrying. Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that we are willing to listen to offers for him. So is this the correct decision?

On paper, the signing of Hernandez was an obvious one to make. We could not afford to miss the opportunity given that we lacked a true goalscorer in the team. Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri were signed for last season and both are no longer at the club. Hernandez is an established Premier League player and proved himself at Manchester United.

It was not a surprise that Hernandez struggled at the start of the season. We were very poor last season and little had changed in terms of tactics under Slaven Bilic this season. We hoped that David Moyes would bring the best out of Hernandez though he has only started once in the Premier League under him. In our recent game against Shrewsbury Town, Hernandez did have the chance to impress though he struggled.

Should we sell or not?

Given that he has only scored four Premier League goals this season, it’s not a shock that some West Ham fans are considering the idea of selling him. But I do not think that we should sell.

Hernandez was always going to struggle given the set-up of the team. He does not have the right players around him which will allow him to flourish. We lack creative players with the team relying on Manuel Lanzini and it is hard for our strikers to score goals given the amount of chances they get per game.

Let’s not forget, we only have two strikers in the squad in Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho. It is hard to rely on Carroll given his injury record and there are rumours that Sakho wants to leave the club. We are in a relegation battle and we cannot afford to be short on players in this crucial period. Selling Hernandez now would be a big mistake.
