West Ham United are reportedly still hopeful of landing Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic following an update on his situation.
The Hammers are one of a few sides to have been linked with Milenkovic of late. Links between the player and West Ham stemmed from their pursuit last summer.
While David Moyes’ side were keen on landing a centre-back, their attempts for Milenkovic were rebuffed. Instead, the 24-year-old signed a new contract with Fiorentina.
However, it has been reported that he would still move on after that extra year was up.
Now a year since his renewal, Milenkovic’s contract will be up next summer. Links of a move away from Fiorentina have cropped up once again.
It also mentions that Fiorentina will only let him leave if the receive an offer ‘they can’t refuse’.
However, with his contract soon up, they may not have a choice in the matter.
With that being said, a move away from the Serie A side now may be on the cards. West Ham face competition in their potential pursuit, with Juventus another interested side.
The report does, however, mention that Milenkovic could ‘retrace the same path’ as last season, and extend his contract again. Whether or not he does actually leave the club remains to be seen.
Milenkovic signing would benefit Hammers
West Ham would benefit from the signing of Milenkovic. He has shown his impact on both ends of the pitch for Fiorentina over the last few seasons.
What’s more, West Ham could do with more depth in the centre-back position. The lack of options they had this season may have hindered them, given the amount of football they played.
For much of the season, they had just two senior centre-backs available. With another European run coming up this season – should they qualify for the Europa Conference League – depth will be important.
While Milenkovic is yet to play in European club competition, he is a mainstay of the Serbia side, having played 33 games since 2018.
As such, he should be able to adapt to playing in the Europa Conference League, which will be an easier challenge than if West Ham were in the Europa League again.
