A pundit has urged West Ham to sign England defender Tyrone Mings from Aston Villa after he lost the captaincy and his starting place.

On July 27, Gerrard named central midfielder John McGinn as Villa’s new captain. While Mings took this well, it didn’t look good for the centre-back and his chances of starting regularly for Villa this season.

And he was left on the bench during Villa’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Saturday, which ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Gerrard went with new signing Diego Carlos in the centre of defence along with Ezri Konsa.

Earlier this week, the Villa boss was asked about how Mings can get back into contention. And he didn’t hold back, telling BBC Radio WM: “When Tyrone is back at his best and looks me in the eye and shows that he’s ready to play, he’ll get opportunities.”

The 29-year-old is clearly set for a tough season. Even if he regains his confidence and gets back to his best, he will still struggle to feature in the league ahead of Carlos and Konsa. The pair seem to be less prone to mistakes than Mings.

Former Tottenham and Villa striker Darren Bent has told West Ham to go in for the 17-cap international. The Irons may be on the lookout for a new centre-half after allowing Issa Diop to join Fulham.

During an appearance on talkSPORT, Bent said: “It sounds like it’s not just on the pitch value or face value.

Tyrone Mings struggling with ‘something deeper’ – pundit

“Maybe there is something deeper going on there because, by Steven Gerrard saying ‘when he looks me in the eye, then I will put him back in’, that tells me there is something else in the background.

“When I look at Tyrone Mings, certainly last season, it wasn’t his best by any stretch of the imagination. When they got him in 2019, he was one of the key factors. He got himself into the England team and done very well.

“Maybe last season, he lost his way a little bit. Defensively, not as assured as I have seen him before. Not as comfortable on the ball. Maybe there is something else going on.

“If I am a team that needs a centre-half, and he’s available, then I would go and get him. I think you have to go and get him. You are talking about an international, he’s a lefty as well, so he gives you balance. West Ham, of course, Diop (has gone) to Fulham. They are short of a couple of CB’s.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone tempts Villa with a little bid for Tyrone Mings. It’s World Cup year and he will want to play.”

While Mings is an international player who also boasts top-flight experience, West Ham fans would probably want their club to steer clear of him.

David Moyes can already rely on Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna at centre-back, as well as new signing Nayef Aguerd.

Mings is not better than Zouma, Dawson or Aguerd. So West Ham supporters would want Mings’ potential wages to be saved so a different position can be improved.

Meanwhile, West Ham will be without Nikola Vlasic this season after letting him join an Italian side on loan with the option to buy.
