West Ham welcome Brighton in an intriguing match on Sunday which could provide insight into where each team goes heading into the new year.

The Hammers have flirted with a top-half finish and a push for a European place after a superb start to the season under David Moyes, while Brighton could be set for another season battling relegation despite appearing to have the potential to achieve much more under Graham Potter.

The Hammers’ confidence after their fine run of form will be tested after their defeat to Chelsea on Monday, while the Seagulls will be desperate for a win after a disappointing draw against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United.

The schedule has provided a slightly more testing run of fixtures over the festive period for Moyes’ side, with three games inside five days, with Southampton on 29 December and Everton on 1 January to follow, while Potter’s outfit have an extra day to recover for their third match with home games against Arsenal on 29 December and then Wolves on 2 January.

Prediction

It will be interesting to see how West Ham’s confidence is hit by a defeat to Chelsea on Monday, with the 3-0 scoreline harsh on the Hammers, while the Seagulls are gradually grinding out results but lacking that standout performance and victory. We’ll edge towards David Moyes’ side grinding out the three points with that added quality in the final third. West Ham 1-0 Brighton.
