West Ham vs Eintracht Frankfurt - LIVE!

One of the biggest nights in West Ham’s recent history got off to a dismal start as Ansgar Knauff’s header put visitors Eintracht Frankfurt ahead inside the first minute of their Europa League semi-final first leg at the London Stadium.

However, the Hammers rallied and drew level before the break thanks to Michail Antonio’s hooked finish.

David Moyes’ side have enjoyed a superb run in the competition, beating Sevilla and Lyon so far in the knockout stages, and have reached the last four of a major European competition for the first time since they beat the same opponents en route to Cup Winners’ Cup glory in 1976.

Moyes rested key men Declan Rice, Antonio and Jarrod Bowen against Chelsea at the weekend but has sprung a huge surprise with his team selection as Kurt Zouma returns from injury way ahead of schedule.

Frankfurt themselves caused a huge upset by knocking out Barcelona in the quarter-final and the Bundesliga outfit now stand between Moyes’ men and a final meeting with either Rangers or RB Leipzig.

West Ham United FC 1 - 2 Eintracht Frankfurt

FT: West Ham 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

21:53 , Malik Ouzia

If West Ham are to reach the final of this competition, they will have to do it the hard way.

They’ll travel to Germany a goal behind.

21:50 , Malik Ouzia

90+2 mins: Oh. My. Goodness.

Jarrod Bowen has engineered an absolutely outrageous bicycle kick, caught it brilliantly, and seen the ball come back off the bar.

21:48 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: There’ll be three minutes added...

21:46 , Malik Ouzia

88 mins: Into the final couple of minutes. Do West Ham just take their medicine here and go to Germany a goal down, or push on for a leveller?

21:43 , Malik Ouzia

85 mins: Crucial, crucial tackle from Rice as Frankfurt break with Zouma on the deck in the opposing box. The Frenchman isn’t moving well...

21:37 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: Off the post!

That would’ve been a real sucker punch. West Ham lose it and Frankfurt break through Kamada, whose shot takes a nick off Dawson and onto the woodwork.

21:35 , Malik Ouzia

77 mins: Declan Rice pings long for Benrahma, who kills the ball brilliantly with his first touch but then shanks high and wide with his second as he looks to work the angle for a shot.

21:33 , Malik Ouzia

75 mins: You can see why David Moyes gets so frustrated by Said Benrahma’s inconsistency because he’s been mesmeric since coming on.

For the first time in the half, the Hammers are putting Frankfurt under the cosh.

21:27 , Malik Ouzia

69 mins: Wow. Said Benrahma takes a chance as two men charge out to close him, weaving between the pair, and then unleashing a stunning strike.

Trapp hasn’t even bothered to move, he’s getting nowhere near it, but it clips the outside of the post on its way wide.

21:24 , Malik Ouzia

66 mins: A little better from the hosts, who’ve been up against it really in the last 15 minutes or so. Fornals scuffs wide after Bowen’s cross had only been half-cleared but it wasn’t much of a chance.

Lanzini is the man to make way for Benrahma.

21:22 , Malik Ouzia

64 mins: Said Benrahma is imminent for the Hammers...

21:20 , Malik Ouzia

62 mins: A problem here for Frankfurt, who have Jesper Lindstrøm down and seemingly in a fair bit of pain clutching his hamstring. His night is done and Jens Petter Hauge is on.

21:17 , Malik Ouzia

59 mins: Well, they’ve responded one. Can they do it again?

Another corner presents a chance to do just that but Fornals’ delivery is too close to Trapp.

GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Frankfurt | Daichi Kamada 54'

21:12 , Malik Ouzia

Wonderful, wonderful football.

Frankfurt cut West Ham open with a superb move that ends with Sow clean through on goal. Areola makes a terrific low save to deny him but Kamada is on hand - and onside - to poke over the line.

21:07 , Malik Ouzia

49 mins: Chance!

Michail Antonio clips one up to the edge of the box for Soucek to hit on the volley but the Czech, in a decent bit of space, drags well wide.

21:06 , Malik Ouzia

48 mins: Bright start from Frankfurt as we get back underway, with Knauff and Rode combining smartly before Rice made a timely tackle in the box.

KICK-OFF!

21:03 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway...

21:02 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are on their way back out at the London Stadium. How the Hammers would love a lead to take to Germany next week.

21:00 , Malik Ouzia

One thing to keep an eye on will of course be how Kurt Zouma holds up. Is David Moyes expecting to get 90 minutes out of him? He’s not got a senior replacement on the bench so he’d either be looking to Declan Rice dropping back or to youth if not...

And here’s how the home side got it roaring again...

20:54 , Malik Ouzia

Here’s how Knauff silenced (most of) the London Stadium...

20:51 , Malik Ouzia

A fantastic response to the early goal from West Ham. They’ve shown maturity and class since going behind and have almost dominated since Antonio’s equaliser.

HT: West Ham 1-1 Frankfurt

20:46 , Malik Ouzia

They got off to the worst possible start, but Moyes’ men have responded well.

All-square a quarter of the way through the tie.

20:46 , Malik Ouzia

45 mins: Cracking feet from Bowen, who is increasingly causing the Frankfurt backline problems. He squirms it through to Soucek, whose shot from a tight angle is deflected behind for a corner.

20:43 , Malik Ouzia

43 mins: Into the final few minutes of the half. I suspect that David Moyes would’ve taken going in level when his side went behind inside 50 seconds.

20:40 , Malik Ouzia

39 mins: That’s a let-off. Frankfurt break from a West Ham corner and again Knauff is the man racing in behind. Cresswell manages to slide in a delay his progress but he eventually still gets a strike away on the turn and fires over the bar.

20:38 , Malik Ouzia

37 mins: You lucky boy, Almamy Touré. The Frankfurt defender is under pressure from Bowen and in trying to poke clear only gives it straight to Johnson.

The defender fires inside to Antonio, who tries to help it on first-time for Fornal - who would’ve been in - but his pass can’t get through Hinteregger.

20:34 , Malik Ouzia

34 mins: Declan Rice has - unsurprisingly - been crucial in West Ham hauling themselves back into this game. He’s positive in possession and has snuffed out a couple of dangerous counters, too.

20:30 , Malik Ouzia

30 mins: Ouch. Jarrod Bowen charges out to block Kostic’s cross and succeeds but with an area of his body he’d probably rather not have used.

20:27 , Malik Ouzia

26 mins: There’s a warning, though. Daichi Kamada stands Dawson up and sells him a dummy - he should probably shoot but tries to be cute and reverse it back inside. The chance is gone.

Jack Rosser is at the London Stadium

20:24 , Malik Ouzia

What a time for Antonio to start scoring again. He had found the net just twice in 2022 before tonight with his last goal coming in early March. Moyes has put the pressure on his No9 to come up with the goods and he finally has. And no surprise West Ham’s salvation came via a set piece.

GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Frankfurt | Michail Antonio 21

20:21 , Malik Ouzia

And there is the leveller!

West Ham’s set-piece threat comes to fruition as Zouma knocks down and Antonio manages to hook it over the line despite the best efforts of Trapp. Terrific response from the Hammers.

20:20 , Malik Ouzia

West Ham are coming back into this and the supporters can sense momentum shifting their way. It was the worst possible of starts but they have kept their heads and would be level were it not for the faintest of touches from Trapp’s boot.

20:18 , Malik Ouzia

18 mins: Good pressure, this. Bowen bends one towards the back post and this time it’s Fornals sneaking up behind Knauff but the Frankfurt man blocks his cut-back behind for a corner.

Off the post!

20:15 , Malik Ouzia

14 mins: So nearly level - and really they should be!

Antonio drops it off and looks like he’s on for the return but Soucek instead slides a terrific ball through for Bowen to run in on goal. You’d have your house on him but the ball comes back off the post - ‘keeper might’ve got the slightest of touches.

20:13 , Malik Ouzia

13 mins: They looked understandably shell-shocked after that opener but West Ham have just started to get a foothold in the last few minutes, Rice and Bowen getting on the ball.

20:10 , Malik Ouzia

9 mins: They’ve settled really well here, the visitors, and Knauff is looking a real threat coming off the right. He makes another darting run inside and is inches away from getting on the end of another.

20:08 , Malik Ouzia

6 mins: Your early reminder that the away goals rules is no longer in existence and it’s just as well for the hosts, who must quickly regroup.

The away end is bouncing.

Jack Rosser is at the London Stadium

20:05 , Malik Ouzia

That was such a sloppy start from West Ham. They’re built on being hard to beat but just invited Frankfurt forward there. Kamada was given far too much time to move forwards with the ball before laying it off to Borre to cross.

GOAL! West Ham 0-1 Frankfurt | Ansgar Knauff 1'

20:02 , Malik Ouzia

The London Stadium is stunned!

Eintracht Frankfurt have the lead inside a minute as Knauff times his run to steal in round the back and head home Borré’s delivery. It was Fornals who switched off and didn’t spot his run until it was too late.

KICK-OFF!

We are underway at the London Stadium...

19:56 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are in the tunnel. One of the biggest nights in the history of this proud club is about to get underway.

19:52 , Malik Ouzia

As you’d expect, the London Stadium is absolutely fizzing. Not long now...

Is Noble allowing thoughts to drift ahead towards a potential final in Seville?

19:37 , Malik Ouzia

“Of course you do. The people who say they don’t are liars because it happens naturally in your head, the thought of winning the Europa League,” he said.

“But there are three games to go so we take care of Thursday first. Then obviously we play Arsenal and then Frankfurt away, so it’s a massive couple of weeks.”

Whatever else happens from hereon in, this will be Mark Noble’s final European home outing in a West Ham shirt and he’s just trotted out to warm-up with the rest of the Hammers squad.

Some servant he has been but you bet your bottom dollar he’s dreaming of bowing out with the trophy in Seville next month.

In fact, he’s been talking about just that this week...

A reminder of how West Ham got here...

19:16 , Malik Ouzia

A reminder of what David Moyes said about Kurt Zouma earlier this week...

19:03 , Malik Ouzia

“Kurt is back doing light work, he is ahead of schedule which is really good,” said Moyes. “Issa [Diop] is actually doing quite well as well, we feel a little bit better than we first hoped.

“There is a bit of positivity around those players and because of that it has given us a bit of a perk up that maybe they’re not quite as long as we thought they might be.

“I never rush players back, it is always better to make sure they’re right.”

Eintracht Frankfurt team news

18:53 , Malik Ouzia

Frankfurt XI: Trapp, Tuta, Hinteregger, Toure, Knauff, Sow, Rode, Kostic, Lindstrom, Kamada, Borre.

Subs: Hrustic, Lammers, Hasebe, Ache, Chandler, Hauge, Da Costa, Lenz, Barkok, Grahl, Paciencia, Horz.

Zouma starts

18:47 , Malik Ouzia

So, six changes to that rotated side that started against Chelsea at the weekend but the one that stands out by a country mile is that Kurt Zouma is back, well ahead of schedule from that ankle injury that the Hammers initially feared would end his season.

With the Frenchman returned, it looks like a back four for the home side.

Antonio’s time

David Moyes has been ramping up the pressure on striker Michail Antonio in recent weeks. West Ham’s only senior forward was a nightmare for the Lyon defence in the last round, but has managed just two goals in 2022 — and none since March 2.

The 32-year-old is getting into great positions but looks shot of confidence when the crucial moment arises. Chances cannot be wasted at this level and now is the time to step up.

Beware Kamada

While Kostic may be the engine and driving force of Frankfurt, Daichi Kamada brings a touch of class. The Japan international, who scored twice during a group-stage meeting with Arsenal three years ago, is renowned for his vision and ability on the ball.

Should Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek be able to deny Kamada the space to operate, the visitors will find creating chances a lot more difficult.

Stop Kostic

Filip Kostic is the heartbeat of this Frankfurt side and bagged two goals in their historic win at Barcelona. The wing-back, who is more naturally a winger, has been dubbed ‘horse lungs’ by fans in Germany, such is his work-rate.

If the Hammers can shackle him, they will go a long way to stopping Frankfurt as a whole, while his tendency to get forward may also open up gaps for Jarrod Bowen.

Standard Sport prediction

17:53 , Malik Ouzia

Even despite their defensive problems, West Ham managed to make life difficult for Chelsea and have been so strong at home in this European campaign.

We are backing them for another famous, hard-fought victory in front of their own fans that will live long in the memory.

West Ham to win 1-0.

Frankfurt team news

17:47 , Malik Ouzia

Frankfurt’s main headache is that Evan Ndicka is suspended after his extremely late red card against Barcelona in the quarter-final second leg at the Camp Nou.

Makoto Hasebe looks his most likely replacement this evening.

West Ham team news

17:42 , Malik Ouzia

West Ham are in the midst of a defensive crisis. While Craig Dawson’s red card against Chelsea means little in a Europa League context, Moyes is short on numbers defensively with Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop all sidelined.

To that end, Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell will likely operate centrally in a three-man defensive line tonight.

Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio will all surely be recalled, after being left out of the starting XI at Chelsea, while Alphonse Areola will continue in his role as cup ‘keeper.
